Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) was recently hit with a Community Notes fact check after sharing a post to X about January 6 on the fourth anniversary of the protest. Klobuchar claimed that officers were “killed” by the “violent mob” of Trump supporters. However, Community Notes pointed out the Minnesota Democrat’s claim was false.
Klobuchar posted on Monday, “Four years ago, the electoral vote certification was interrupted by a violent mob. Police officers were injured and killed. Our democracy hung in the balance. I knew we had to do our duty and complete the count – and in the early hours of January 7th, we did.” Citing news sources, the fact check explained that no officers were killed as a result of the J6 protest.
The note read, “No officers were killed. The medical examiner found Sicknick died of natural causes which means “a disease alone causes death. If death is hastened by an injury, the manner of death is not considered natural.” Four other officers committed suicide days to months later.” Several links were provided to substantiate this rebuke.
Nonetheless, Klobuchar wrote a follow-up statement in the comments section of her post that read, “As Chair of the Rules Committee, I knew we could never let an insurrection overtake the Capitol again. That is why I worked across the aisle to improve Capitol security and pass updates to the antiquated Electoral Count Act. Today, our democracy is stronger for it.”
The American Tribune reported on comments from President-elect Donald Trump addressing J6 protestors, where he pointed out that the only people who died that day were supporters of his. A reporter noted that “police officers were injured by rioters on January 6.” She then asked, “Will you pardon anyone who attacked a police officer?” Responding, Trump said, “Well, you know, the only one that was killed was a beautiful young lady and Ashley Babbitt, she was killed.”
Trump continued, “And there was actually somebody else that was killed, also a MAGA person.” The incoming president maintained that these two deaths are seemingly left out of the narrative when January 6 is discussed. “But people don’t give it 100% credibility,” he stated. Trump vowed to further investigate the matter, stating, “I’m going to find out about it, and we’re going to find out. But Ashley Babbitt was killed. She was shot. She had never been shot. She was shot for no reason whatsoever. In fact, they say that she was trying to hold back the crowd, and the crowd is made up of a lot of different people, so we’ll see.”
“But I will tell you this, the person that was was killed was Ashli Babbittt,” Trump maintained. Moreover, he pointed out that there were never insurrection charges while highlighting no weapons involved. “But the other thing is, when they talk, you know, there was never charges of insurrection or anything like that. But if there were, this would be the only insurrection in history where people went in as insurrectionists with not one gun.”
Watch Trump here:
Trump continued, “And let me tell you, the people that you’re talking about have a lot of guns in their home for hunting and for shooting and for entertainment, and a lot of good reasons, but there wasn’t one gun that they found.” Calling out the FBI, Trump then said, “And why didn’t they find the bomber, the pipe bomber? You know, they know who the pipe bomber is. The FBI knows who it is. The status of the FBI has gone down so far.”
