Democrat Senator Left Injured by Serious Car Crash

According to his office, Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) was left injured by what sounds like a relatively serious car crash, with another driver on the road suffering a medical episode and, while debilitated, crashing into several nearby cars, including the one in which the senator was riding as a passenger. The senator suffered, his office said, “minor” injuries in the crash, though he was temporarily hospitalized.

Apparently, Sen. Coons was riding in the passenger seat in the front of a vehicle that a staffer was driving around mid-morning (10:20 am) on Sunday, June 28, along Savannah Road in Lewes, Delaware. As they rode along, the driver of a nearby pickup truck suffered the aforementioned medical episode and crashed into them and other vehicles, creating a multi-car pileup.

The senator’s office released a statement on the accident. Beginning, it gave a basic description of what happened, saying, “Earlier today, a Delaware driver experienced a medical incident and collided with several cars, including one in which Senator Coons was a passenger.”

Continuing, the statement went on to note that he is expected to recover and is at home rather than the hospital, saying, “Senator Coons was transported to Beebe Hospital and treated for minor injuries. He is now home and expected to make a full and swift recovery.”

Thanking the first responders, the statement then said, “Senator Coons is deeply grateful to the first responders for their prompt and professional response, including the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, as well as the capable doctors and nurses at Beebe Hospital, where he received excellent care. He feels relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash.”

The senator posted much the same thing on his X account. “Earlier today, a Delaware driver experienced a medical incident and collided with several cars, including one in which I was a passenger. I was transported to Beebe Hospital and treated for minor injuries. I’m now home and expected to make a full and swift recovery,” he said.

He added, “I’m deeply grateful to the first responders for their prompt and professional response, including the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, as well as the capable doctors and nurses at Beebe Hospital, where I received excellent care. I’m feeling relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash.”

Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell confirmed in comments to People magazine that the vehicle in which Sen. Coons was a passenger, “as well as several other vehicles, were struck by a pickup truck whose driver had a suspected medical issue causing him to lose consciousness.”

“There are no indications of impairment of the truck driver,” the Lewes police chief added, quashing rumors of any driving under the influence problems having been at play in this situation, as some commenters on the senator’s X posts about the incident had immediately suggested.
