An advocate of the “defund the police” movement recently demonstrated why policing is valuable in the seemingly lawless state of urban America. In an unfortunate twist of irony, Jerque Cousteau, known for her staunch anti-police activism, experienced the consequences of living in progressive urban environments with underfunded police departments and high levels of criminality.
Cousteau took to X, posting a lengthy thread explaining her predicament. “Hey guys. If you see a 26 foot uhaul truck with the Arizona plate AL50003- would you let me know because it had like everything I own on it. It was stolen near Noe and Market and fun fact: @uhaul doesn’t put gps on their trucks and thieves apparently know this,” she wrote.
“Hey @AaronPeskin @RafaelMandelman @LondonBreed would be cool if I could get my stuff back but also; maybe you could do something to make sure that companies like uhaul put gps on their vehicles so when theft occurs, I could at least know where my stuff went,” she added, expressing her desire to have her belongings returned.
The liberal activist explained her motivations for her moving, explaining that the Bay Area cost of living had exceeded her means while lamenting the supposed lack of resources in the public school system. “I’m like moving out of my house because I can’t afford to live here anymore, my kid just broke his femur at one of your many, underfunded SFUSD schools and there was no nurse present to help him, I had to push him to my car in a rolling office chair – lmao WTF is this city?” she asked, bemoaning the state of San Francisco, governed almost entirely by progressive politics.
Describing a job fit for a properly-funded police department, made a final appeal in the thread emphasizing her desire to have her belongings returned. “I just want my sh*t back, the sentimental stuff, please. I don’t about the people who stole it, people steal shit, I just hope they take the stuff they need and I can recover the personal stuff that’s the stuff I’m struggling with,” she said.
Another person commented a similar experience in the crime-ridden state of San Francisco. “After thieves broke into our rented van in SF few years ago and stole everything I never wanted to go back. The beautiful city is now a den of thieves. At least you are unharmed to start life new where ever your destination is without your stuff,” they said. Similarly, another person said, “The way I knew this was SF without reading your reply to confirm was wild. Hope you find your stuff!”
Other posts in the comments section mocked Costeau’s misfortune, claiming it was ironic for the defund the police activist to have been the victim of insufficient law enforcement. Others took it as an opportunity to call for San Franciscans, and Californians for that matter, to wake up and realize the impacts of the policies they vote for at the ballot box.
In a post from 2022, Costeau previously said, “When we locked down & people had time to get angry & organize, we took to the streets to demand justice. Lots of promises to defund cops that never happened. No matter how bad this pandemic gets, they’ll never give us the ability to do that again. They’ll always prioritize cops.”
