Dallas police responded to a shooting on South Malcolm X Boulevard at around 1 am on May 20th after Gabriel Leuyas allegedly killed a woman he used to “talk to” at the behest of his current girlfriend, who demanded he “smoke her.”
According to Fox News Digital, the current girlfriend of Gabriel Leuyas, Breaira Martin, was roused to rage after she discovered that Leuyas used to “talk to” Keerstin Cooper when Martin and Cooper were in an argument. Martin, during her continuing fight with Cooper, allegedly called Leuyas and demanded he come over and “smoke,” meaning kill, Cooper.
Leuyas loyally did so, allegedly using a handgun tucked into his waistband to shoot Cooper twice through the windshield of a car. Another woman hopped in the vehicle after Cooper was shot and drove her to the hospital, where Cooper later died.
Police said that, using both gang records and surveillance video from the area, along with evidence from footage from social media and body cameras, they were able to identify both Leuyas and Martin as the suspects in the homicide, Leuyas was charged with murder and unlawfully carrying a weapon. Martin was charged with murder and resisting arrest.
According to the website Neighborhood Scout, which tracks various details about cities and communities, including crime rates, Dallas is one of the most dangerous cities in the state of Texas. It has an overall crime rate of 45 crimes for every 1000 residents, which makes it more dangerous that 98% of the communities in Texas.
However, though particularly dangerous for Texas, Dallas is about the middle of the pack for America when controlled for population size, Neighborhood Scout reports. Though the report does not elaborate on why that might be, Texas’ generally permissive laws regarding carrying weapons and using deadly force in self-defense situations could be a reason why even its more dangerous cities is just in the middle of the pack in comparison to other cities in America.
Despite that, Dallas does have a very problematic violent crime rate, even when compared to the rest of America. Those violent crimes, namely murder, non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and the various forms of assault, are a large problem for the city, and one’s chance of being a victim of such a crime is one in 116, Neighborhood Scout reports. That figure was calculated using FBI crime statistic data.
Additionally, the violent crime problem is true for murder, as Neighborhood Scout also reports that the murder rate in Dallas is one of the highest in the nation.
