Country music legend Carrie Underwood was recently revealed to be performing at President-elect Donald Trump’s highly anticipated inauguration next week. Underwood, known as one of the most successful country music stars in history, is set to perform alongside other star acts. Reports also indicate the Village People, famous for one of Trump’s favorite songs the “YMCA,” will also perform.
The multi-platinum member of the Grand Ole Opry released a statement expressing her gratitude to be chosen for the inaugural performance. As Trump’s popularity has surged, evident by his decisive victory in the election which won him the popular vote and every single swing state, celebrities have been much more willing to associate with the incoming president. Reportedly, Trump’s team struggled to find artists who would commit to performing at his 2017 inauguration.
“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said in a statement to PEOPLE. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future,” she added, emphasizing her desire to bring Americans together.
Fans of Underwood reacted to the news on social media, celebrating the singer’s attendance. Popular conservative X account Sassafrass 84 wrote, “I couldn’t be happier that the one celebrity I do like and respect will be attending President Trumps inauguration. Carrie Underwood will be performing America The Beautiful. She is such a class act.”
Conservative commentator Tom Moore wrote, “Just listened to Jesus take the wheel by Carrie Underwood Perhaps she could sing that too at Inauguration as a signal Christianity is no longer under attack like under Obama & Biden.” Another comment read, “Being from Oklahoma, I was ashamed of her for a while due to her support of BLM whenever it was happening. I can now say confidently that I am proud of her again!! She’s gonna be amazing! I can’t wait to see what she brings!”
However, in previous years, Underwood made to refrain from getting involved in politics, claiming in 2019 that “more people try to pin me places politically.” She added, “I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black and white. And it’s not like that.”
Moreover, the Village People decided to accept Trump’s invitation to perform, months after the founder of the group, Victor Willis, had expressed hesitation toward the idea. Willis recently wrote on Facebook, TO VILLAGE PEOPLE FANS AND THE MEDIA. We are announcing today that VILLAGE PEOPLE have accepted an invitation from President Elect Trump’s campaign to participate in inaugural activities, including at least one event with President Elect Trump.”
Acknowledging the inevitable pushback from the left, he continued, “We know this wont make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics. Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost. Therefore, we believe it’s now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump.”
