Wholesale shopping has exploded in popularity under Joe Biden’s administration. The need to save dollars on gas, food, and household goods, among other things, has led many folks to sign up for the bulk shopping experience. Sam’s Club and Costco have been the big winners in the wholesale game, and for one chain in particular, their food court menu has become a thing of legend.
Costco, the Washington State-based wholesaler, features a much-loved food court in its locations that is legendary for the quality of the snacks and the value of the cost. However, a rumored change to the menu that became a reality has rankled regulars and snack aficionados at Costco’s across the country. Costco decided to drop their much-beloved churro from the menu, and initial reviews aren’t good.
Rumors swirled months ago on Reddit that Costco would be ditching the sweet, cinnamon-sugar treat in favor of a chocolate chip cookie, and fans aren’t pleased. The churro, which sold for $1.49, has long been a favorite. Upset customers complained on Reddit: “Noooooo — where else am i supposed to get a churro? I can get cookies anywhere but churros? Only at Costco.” Yet another claimed: “[I] hope not. thats my fav treat there for 20 years. I WILL complain.”
Apparently, the change is going to be a nationwide reality. The rollout is slowly taking place as the chain replaces the churro with a massive 750-calorie chocolate chip cookie. Worse than the caloric content is the price. The cookie sells for $2.50, a full dollar more than the fan-favorite churro. However, not all early reviews are bad. One snacker said: “The consistency is perfect. Crunchy on the edges — a light crisp on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside.”
The biggest complaint appears to be the price point, which is understandable considering it is a wholesale shopping center. One angry customer said: “This is the price of almost two 1/4 lb hot dogs and two sodas and…the price of 1/2 of a rotisserie chicken. I will never order/eat this cookie again.” Whether that is a commentary on the quality of the cookie or the lack of quality of the hot dogs is debatable, but everyone needs to save money under Joe Biden, so the complaints are valid.
Some shoppers couldn’t care less about the churro. Apparently, Costco redesigned the product during COVID-19, and the latter-day churro isn’t quite what hungry shoppers remembered. Critics claim: “The churros have been dead to me since they moved to the twisted ones anyway.” While yet another chimed in: “I’m sorry, but the churros became obsolete when the ‘50% more expensive,’ ‘new’ and ‘much less improved’ ‘twisted’ version appeared during COVID.”
It might seem small and like a ridiculous thing to complain about, but considering the economy and uncertainty surrounding life every day, who can blame folks for wanting something that makes them feel good at a good price? Costco won’t lose customers, but maybe this will make Sam’s Club raise its game snack-wise. Either way, if your Costco still sells the churro, rush out and stock up before they are all gone.
