According to a conservative watchdog group called the Media Research Center, leftist billionaire George Soros has spent heavily on pushing censorship in the runup to the 2024 election, as Fox News Digital reported. According to the Media Research Center (<MRC), which aims to “successfully to expose and counter the leftist bias of the national news media,” he is doing so through a group called Free Press.
Free Press claims that it “closely watches as the decisions shaping the media landscape are made and sounds the alarm when people’s rights to connect and communicate are in danger.” However, MRC claims that the truth is much otherwise, and that the group, funded heavily by George Soros, instead aims to push censorship ahead of 2024.
Specifically, Fox News Digital reports that MRC “is looking to incorporate global pressure to push Big Tech platforms to juice their censorship operations before the 2024 U.S. presidential election.” Such censorship operations would, theoretically, look like the anti-conservative censorship that plagued America in the run-up to and aftermath of the 2020 election.
Dan Schneider, the vice president of MRC’s Free Speech America, told Fox News Digital, “One of the wealthiest men in the world is using his vast wealth and power to silence regular Americans ahead of the 2024 election. At a time when defending free speech is key, leftists are trying their best to shut down the voices of half of America, especially those who disagree with the radical agenda promoted by Biden, Soros and most Big Tech executives.”
MRC also drew attention to a letter bragged about by Free Press in which “more than 200 civil-society organizations, researchers and journalists” urged “top executives at Discord, Google, Instagram, Meta, Pinterest, Reddit, Rumble, Snap, TikTok, Twitch, Twitter and YouTube” to make “distinct interventions to keep online platforms safe and healthy in 2024.”
Describing those demanded interventions, Free Press said, “These include investing in greater platform accountability by reinstating election-integrity policies and staffing up critical trust and safety teams to better enforce policies across languages. The letter also calls on platforms to improve transparency by enabling civil-society oversight of their enforcement practices, and to require clear disclosure of AI-generated political content while prohibiting the use of deepfakes in political ads. (Read the full list of interventions and letter signers here.) The coalition asks that companies provide substantive responses to the letter by April 22, 2024.”
Commenting on that letter, MRC assistant editor Joseph Vazquez told Fox News Digital, “The document attempted to justify that it was written with reducing ‘real-world harms’ and ‘the rise of extremism and violent attempts to overthrow democratic governments’ in mind. However, it appears its true design is to pressure Big Tech companies to silence speech the left despises as 60 countries across the globe gear up for their elections in 2024.”
He added, “But even more disturbing was the letter’s implication that its primary target is interfering in the 2024 U.S. election. This development is directly in line with Soros’ brand, who has dedicated millions of his ungodly fortune to groups looking to interfere in elections by stifling online speech.”
Explaining the funding for such pro-censorship efforts, Vazquez said, “The signatory that received the most Soros funding in MRC’s tally was none other than the climate change-obsessed Global Witness, which is already on record pressuring Facebook and TikTok to increase censorship operations before the 2022 midterm elections.”
He added, “The Soros empire funded the group with a massive $20,338,270 between 2016 and 2022. The group’s ‘digital threats’ campaign, for example, is specifically focused on pressuring governments to regulate speech on social media.” Further, MRC claimed that the letter’s signatories received more than $80 million, claiming, “at least 45 of the signatories have had their coffers packed with Soros cash to the tune of a whopping $80,757,329 between 2016 and 2022 alone.”
