Throughout Joe Biden’s presidency, millions of illegal immigrants have poured into the American interior through the unsecured Southern Border with Mexico. Amid the influx of migrants entering the country unlawfully, Republican leaders are striving to pass substantive legislation to address the issues that stem from unfettered illegal immigration.
Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) proposed a bill to exclude illegal immigrants from the census, which determines the apportionment for seats in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College. The Tennessee Republican’s bill sought to add an amendment to the $460 billion spending package, mandating that the census include a question on U.S. citizenship.
The move would bar illegal immigrants and non-U.S. Citizens from being counted for congressional district and Electoral College representation. However, liberal politicians have attempted to stand in the way of this legislative effort, where 51 Democrats and Independents voted against the bill. 45 Republicans voted in favor of Sen. Hagerty’s proposal.
Sen. Hagerty commented on the failure of his proposed bill, calling out Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and every single Democrat in the chamber who voted in opposition to the legislation. He slammed the Senate Democrats for prioritizing illegal immigrants and their own political power over the rights of American citizens.
“Today I forced Chuck Schumer to hold a vote on whether illegal aliens should be counted for determining the number of congressional seats and electoral votes each state gets. Democrats’ unanimous opposition to this commonsense measure confirms that they’re using illegal aliens and sanctuary cities to increase their political power,” Hagerty stated. “With this vote, Senate Democrats chose to trample on the rights of each American’s voice. I will continue to fight and press this issue in the Senate.”
Billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has seemingly become more conservative based on his public comments, also weighed in on the issue of illegal immigrants being counted on the census. Echoing similar concerns to Sen. Hagerty, Musk illustrated the implications of millions of migrants being included in counts that directly determine congressional seat apportionment and the electoral college.
“Most Americans do not know that the US census currently counts, for purposes of voting power, all people in a district, regardless of citizenship! Senate Democrats just voted unanimously to defeat an amendment that would have stopped counting illegals for congressional seat apportionment and electoral college (presidential) votes. Since illegals are mostly in Democrat states, both the House and the Presidential vote are shifted ~5% to the left, which is enough to change the entire balance of power! This is a major reason why the Biden administration is ushering in record levels of illegals and doing so few deportations,” he posted on X.
Musk’s comment was a response to conservative commentator Greg Price, who wrote on X, “Not a single Democrat Senator just voted for Sen. Bill Hagerty’s amendment to stop illegal aliens from being counted in apportionment for congressional districts and the Electoral College.”
Hagerty’s failed bill was reminiscent of similar legislation from former President Donald Trump’s first term, which would have also added a citizenship question for the 2020 census. However, Democrats also criticized the idea of asking for one’s citizenship status while also claiming it would benefit Republicans politically.
