In a start departure from his previous remarks, NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, pledged to call President Trump before taking office, calling the relationship “critical” to the city’s success.
For context, in an NBC interview, he emphasized the importance of proactive leadership and openness to collaboration on reducing living costs, while prioritizing the needs of New Yorkers over past self-serving deals. Trump, on Fox News, labels Mamdani’s victory speech “angry” and warns he’s off to a “bad start,” insisting the mayor-elect be “very nice” since he controls federal approvals.
Zohran Mamdani began his comments, delivered in an NBC New York interview with Melissa Russo, with typical whining. “I will be proactive in the work that I do, and I think that is because of the responsibility I hold to 8.5 million people being their mayor,” the self-described socialist said.
However, the controversial Democrat backed down from his previous hardline rhetoric. Mamdani said, “It is important that you are open to working with anyone, no matter what disagreements you may have,” adding, “I’ve said this when it pertains to President Trump, that President Trump wants to speak about lowering the cost of living or delivering cheaper groceries like he ran on, I’m there to have that conversation.”
Offering a more reasonable take, Mamdani continued his comments, saying, “The distinction will be that previous administrations have looked to have that conversation to the benefit of themselves, in the expense of the people that we look to serve.”
Making his opinions more explicit, in his acceptance speech, he declared, “I will be reaching out to the White House” before entering office, adding, “This is a relationship that will be critical to the success of this city. I’m here to work for the benefit of everyone that calls [NYC] their home, and that wherever there is a possibility for working together towards that end, I’m ready.”
Reacting to the victory speech, President Trump hilariously quipped, “Turn the volume up.” Similarly, he noted, “It was a very angry speech, certainly angry toward me. I think he should be very nice to me. You know, I’m the one that sort of has to approve a lot of things coming for him. So, he’s off to a bad start.”

Even before he won the election, Trump had no kind words for the conservative Democrat. “Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous,” he declared.
Additionally, he threatened to pull federal funds from NYC after the election, noting, If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home.”
In another iconic rebuke, the president predicted disaster of the far left candidate would be successful, saying, “I have a strong conviction that New York City will be a Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.
