A former city official from Matamoros, a border city, remains in federal custody after U.S. law enforcement agents placed him under arrest for attempting to smuggle cocaine into Texas. The City of Matamoros has been trying to put as much distance as possible between it and the official, claiming that he had stopped working for them months before he was taken into custody.
The ordeal started during Easter, when Luis Miguel Garduno was driving a late-model GMC Acadia from the town of Brownsville north to Corpus Christi, Texas. A criminal complaint that was filed against Garduno revealed that he pulled up to the Javier Vega U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in Kinney County, which is located roughly 80 miles north of the border.
While stopped at the checkpoint, agents sent Garduno to a secondary inspection area, where a police drug dog alerted officers to possible drugs inside the vehicle. Authorities then searched the vehicle, uncovering a hidden trap door in the floor. Inside the space, authorities found ten bundles of cocaine. The total weight of the substance in the bundles was 10.92 kilograms, or 22 pounds.
According to a report from Breitbart, when Garduno was later interviewed by agents, he informed them that he had been told to drive the loaded vehicle in order to pay off a debt he owed. As of this writing, there is no information contained in court documents revealing the identity of the individual who told him to drive the truck or additional details concerning Garduno’s debt.
However, the drug trafficking operations located in Brownsville and the border city of Matamoros are both controlled by the Gulf Cartel. Garduno’s arrest went relatively unnoticed for a few days, but then the City of Matamoros blasted out a notice distancing itself from the man, who had once served as the director of public services. The statement claimed that Garduno had stopped working in that position several months prior to his arrest.
Garduno is just one of several high-profile officials from Matamoros to be busted for having connections to the Gulf Cartel. Many individuals took to the comment section of the Breitbart News report to share their thoughts on the story. One individual noted that this type of crime proves President Donald Trump correct in his assessment of illegal aliens entering the country.
“‘They’re bringing crime, they’re bringing drugs. They’re rapists, some of them!’ Trump proven right yet again,” the commenter said. Another person agreed, saying, “Trump is nearly always correct.” A third individual provided a bit of a history lesson that points out how deep the corruption in Mexico truly goes and calls for President Trump to tackle the issues it’s causing America after the Iran war ends.

“Every aspect of Mexican society is corrupt and has been for at least two centuries. Mexico, which should be renamed Cartels R Us, has been and is our most dangerous enemy over the past few decades and has done far more damage to the U.S. and the American people than any other nation with it’s drug and human trafficking, the illegal invasion of millions of Mexicans and the consequential destruction of our education and healthcare systems,” the person wrote. “When Trump finishes with Iran I hope he turns to Mexico next. And yes I realize that China is our archenemy for the long term but Mexico is a clear and present danger now.”
