The city manager of Mannsville, Oklahoma, which is a town located in the far southern part of the state, was arrested and slapped with almost a dozen charges of voter fraud, according to new reports coming out of the Sooner State. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Shonda Lou Barnes, the city manager of the town, was arrested and then charged with 11 counts of false affidavits in voter registration.
Barnes was taken into custody thanks to an investigation that was opened in late May after the Johnston County Election Board contacted the sheriff’s office about concerns they had over voter registration applications. The office then said the registrations were submitted before the May deadline for the primary election that was held in June 2026.
However, investigators say they soon discovered that several applications had matching signatures, signaling that they did not belong to the individuals who registered. Barnes was then arrested and booked into the Johnston County Jail. “As one of Oklahoma’s 77 constitutionally elected Sheriffs, it is our duty and the duty of every Sheriff’s Office in this State to protect the integrity of our elections — one of the most sacred rights of citizens of this country,” Sheriff Gary W. Dodd said about the situation.
Conservatives have been making the case for months now that this is why it is critical to pass the SAVE America Act, as it would prevent such situations from happening. If the legislation were to finally get through the Senate — it has already passed the House — and be signed into law, it would require individuals who are registering to vote to prove they are legitimate citizens of the country.
This would mean providing documentation like a birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport. An additional layer of security to protect the integrity of federal elections is the requirement for all folks casting ballots to present photo ID at the polls. While the Barnes situation is more locally focused, municipalities could certainly take a page from the playbook and apply similar rules to their own election systems.
Democrats have tried to make the case that voter fraud isn’t real, but a figment of the conservative imagination. That simply is not true. Not only does Barnes’ case prove it, but the Department of Homeland Security discovered in July 2026 that thousands of noncitizens had been registered to vote. The biggest offending states were California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Nevada. “We’ve identified 250,000 noncitizens registered to vote in four states,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullins said.
According to Politico, California’s Secretary of State is pursuing a legal challenge of the Justice Department’s demand for statewide voter registration and has yet to turn over the requested information. The big takeaway from all of this is that voter fraud absolutely does exist and it is happening in places all across the country.

Republicans believe that the SAVE America Act, if passed, will help curb the vast majority of this fraud and preserve our way of life, but if it can get passed through the Senate remains to be seen. Mullin also sent out letters to the states mentioned above calling on them to step up to the plate and help ensure elections are protected from folks like Barnes.
