Democrats are panicking after their epic failure with the government shutdown, fear that is most definitely warranted after the release of a new poll from The Economist/YouGov. The results of the survey show that only eight percent of Americans feel the Democrats “won” in the battle over the government shutdown, which lasted a historic eight weeks.
The poll asked those who participated, “In your opinion, who won the shutdown battle?” Around 39 percent said that neither Republicans nor Democrats came out as victors in the shutdown, while 35 percent said the GOP won the fight. Again, only eight percent believe Democrats came out ahead in the battle over the shutdown.
Most Democrats, for perhaps the first time ever, aren’t delusional enough to think they pulled off a win with the ridiculously long shutdown. Only 14 percent of Democrats who participated in the survey said Democrats won. A total of 25 percent believe the Republican Party won, with 45 percent stating it wasn’t a victory for either side.
On the other hand, 52 percent of Republicans believe their side won, with 26 percent saying neither party won. When it comes to independents, the vast majority, 46 percent, say nobody was victorious in the messy shutdown rumble. A total of 28 percent said Republicans won, with only 4 percent saying Democrats did.
The poll was conducted between the dates of November 15-17, 2025 with a sample size of 1,549 U.S. citizens. The margin of error is +/- 3.5 percent. Democrats ultimately caved in, passing a clean continuing resolution bill after Republicans promised a vote on healthcare extensions in December.
The bill will provide funding for the federal government through the end of January 2026. It includes three out of twelve appropriations for Fiscal Year 2026. Agriculture, military construction-Veterans Affairs, and the legislative branch will be funded through the end of September.
According to Breitbart, the government shutdown spanned 43 days, mostly due to stubborn Democratic leadership in Congress seeking to succor their voter base by including healthcare provisions for illegal immigrants. Over and over again, the radical left-wing element within the Democratic Party shot down clean CR bills put forward by Republicans.

Democrats demanded $1.5 trillion in partisan spending, half a billion of which would have been sent to leftist media outlets, along with cash to provide healthcare for illegals. “For the past 43 days, Democrats in Congress shut down the government of the United States in an attempt to extort American taxpayers for hundreds of billions of dollars for illegal aliens and people that came into our country illegally,” Trump had stated at the time.
“Today, we’re sending a clear message that we will never give in to extortion, because that’s what it was. They tried to extort — the Democrats tried to extort our country,” he added, providing a bit more perspective on the matter. “They caused 20,000 flights to be canceled or delayed; they departed so many times so late. People were hurt so badly. Nobody’s ever seen anything like this one. This was a no-brainer, this was an easy extension, but they didn’t want to do it the easy way.”
