In remarks similar to those made by former President Donald Trump over the weekend, He Xiaopeng, the CEO of a Chinese auto company called XPeng Motors, predicted that cheap electric vehicles made in China would lead to a “bloodbath” for the auto industry. His remarks were similar to those made by Trump, who warned that China-made EVs could lead to a bloodbath for the auto industry.
CEO He’s comments came in a memo to employees obtained by CNBC in mid-February, 2024. In the memo, He argued that Chinese automakers are engaged in fierce industrial war with their Western competitors that could result in either a “victory” for Chinese automakers like XPeng Motors or a “bloodbath” for those companies that try to compete.
Xiapeng wrote, in the February memo to employees, “This year also marks the beginning of a fierce competition that may end in a ‘bloodbath’ (or as I prefer to call it, the brutal ‘knockout round’) among Chinese auto makers.”
He continued, emphasizing, that XPeng had the necessary spirit to fight back, in his view. “XPeng has engaged in this cutthroat competition right from the outset, thus accumulating considerable experience. Our guts, grit and perseverance, I firmly believe, will lead us to victory,” He said.
That CEO’s remarks were similar to those made by former President Donald Trump about how the American auto industry could be knocked out by stiff competition from China if protective tariffs are not raised to give American companies more of an opportunity to overcome China’s low cost advantage.
Trump made that remark at a campaign stop in Vidalia, Ohio. He said, “We’re going to put a 100 percent tariff on every single car that comes across the line and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected.” Continuing, he added, “Now if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole, that’s going to be the least of it, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the country, that’s going to be the least of it.”
Watch him here:
The leftist media attempted to frame Trump’s remarks as him saying there would be a “bloodbath” for America if he does not get elected. Trump rebutted their claims on Truth Social. In one post, for example, he said, “The Fake News made a big deal out of the word “Bloodbath,” knowing that it was about our shrinking auto manufacturing business, and the fact that they use the same name all the time. They are sooo bad!”
In another, he wrote, “The Fake News Media, and their Democrat Partners in the destruction of our Nation, pretended to be shocked at my use of the word BLOODBATH, even though they fully understood that I was simply referring to imports allowed by Crooked Joe Biden, which are killing the automobile industry. The United Auto Workers, but not their leadership, fully understand what I mean. With the Electric Car Mandate being pushed by Biden, there soon won’t be any cars made in the USA – UNLESS I’M ELECTED PRESIDENT, IN WHICH CASE AUTO MANUFACTURING WILL THRIVE LIKE NEVER BEFORE!!!
