Following the presidential debate earlier this week, Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance has been praised for his performance against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. However, conservatives have criticized CBS debate moderator Margaret Brennan for interjecting and attempting to fact-check Vance after his comments about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio.
During the debate, Vance mentioned the embattled town of Springfield, Ohio, while making a broader point about illegal immigration and the failure of Vice President Kamala Harris’ leadership on the issue. After Vance’s comment, Brennan attempted to dispute the Ohio senator’s claim. Vance fired back at Brennan, setting the record straight before his microphone was eventually cut. Subsequently, users on social media have blasted the apparent bias against Vance during the debate.
“THE CBS MODERATORS IN THE #VPDEBATE2024 ARE BIASED. THEY’RE MESSING WITH JD THEY CUT HIS MIC GOOD FOR TRUMP FOR BEING A GOOD PRESIDENT. GO JD…60 MINUTES APOLOGIZE TO TRUMP. THEY WANNA TURN AMERICA INTO HONG KONG. JD VANCE KILLING IT,” one person emphatically posted on X, discussing the debate.
“Margaret Brennan snarks at JD Vance mid-response before cutting his microphone. Regime Media continues to Regime,” one person wrote in the comments section. “It was another bad look for legacy news. The left will cheer on this behavior because they’ve been brainwashed. Objective watchers will see this as another death knell of legacy media’s hold on public opinion,” another user added.
Others praised Trump’s running mate for his critically acclaimed performance during the debate, noting his bright future in Republican politics. “Yet, history writes that Vance’s presence dominated the moment he walked onto the stage. Like President Kennedy…polished, civil, articulate, brilliant JD Vance. Trump knows how to hire people! Wow! Trump Vance For our future,” another person wrote.
For context, Brennan asserted that the Haitian migrants in Ohio had legal status, insinuating that they were not relevant in the discussion regarding illegal immigration. “Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, Temporary Protected Status,” she said. However, Vance fired back immediately, offering further context after Brennan broke the alleged agreement not to fact-check.
“But Margaret, the rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact-check, and since you’re fact-checking me, I think it’s important to say what’s actually going on,” Vance stated. “So there’s an application called the CBP One app where you can go on as an illegal migrant, apply for asylum or apply for parole and be granted legal status at the wave of a Kamala Harris open border wand.”
“That is not a person coming in applying for a green card and waiting for 10 years — ” the Ohio senator said before Brennan and co-moderator Norah O’Donnell tried to shut down Vance and prevent him from continuing to dispute the fact-check. “Thank you, senator, for describing the legal process,” Margaret responded, before moving to the next point.
