California AG Sues San Diego Hospital after It Ends Gender Transition Treatment for Minors

Shocking the nation, California Attorney General Rob Bonta sued Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego for ending gender-affirming care, including gender transition treatments, for minors, claiming it violated binding conditions from the hospital’s January 2025 merger with Children’s Hospital of Orange County, which required continuing such services.

For context, the hospital complied after the Trump administration threatened to strip federal funding and shut it down for providing puberty blockers, hormones, and surgeries to minors, citing an HHS declaration deeming them unsafe. Allegedly, the suit seeks to restore care, impose penalties, and enforce obligations amid federal restrictions on youth transgender treatments.

Reacting to the situation in a fury-filled statement that attacked the hospital and President Trump, California Attorney General Bonta angrily claimed, “Rady Children’s Health has chosen to violate its merger agreement and California law in response to the Trump Administration’s illegal campaign against providers of gender-affirming care.”

Doubling down on these awful remarks about the hospital, he added, “Rady flagrantly disregarded its legal obligations by unilaterally deciding to preemptively comply with the Administration’s demands and cease medically necessary care for roughly 1,450 patients.”

Concluding his comments, California AG Bonta alleged, “We will not allow Rady to violate its obligations to its patients and the State. We will fight to uphold the law and ensure Californians can access gender-affirming care without facing unfair roadblocks.”

Tony Hoang, the Executive Director of a far-left NGO, applauded the lawsuit. “Equality California applauds Attorney General Bonta for taking decisive legal action to hold Rady Children’s Hospital accountable for unlawfully ending medically necessary health care for transgender youth,” the activist whined.

Building on this point, he added, “This lawsuit sends a clear message: hospitals and health care providers are bound by the law and will be held accountable if they abandon patients or ignore their legal obligations under the guise of political pressure.”

Another local LGBTQ charity freaked out on social media. “We are devastated to hear that the Trump administration’s proposal to cut federal funding from hospitals that provide gender-affirming care for patients 18 and under is affecting patients at Rady Children’s Hospital,” the San Diego LGBT Community Center posted.

The activists added, “These federal threats are pushing hospitals nationwide to restrict or shut down essential services, and this is unacceptable…It is a direct attack on the rights of transgender and nonbinary youth, denying them care that was already thoughtfully discussed, planned, and agreed upon with their medical providers.”

“Now, that care is being abruptly canceled, prioritizing a targeted political agenda over evidence-based medical care that saves lives. This is causing deep and devastating harm to trans and nonbinary youth, our most vulnerable community members,” the same post read.

Defending their decision to do what the president has ordered, the hospital countered, “The recent changes to our gender-affirming care services reflect a very difficult decision. That decision was guided by our responsibilities as a nonprofit pediatric healthcare system to continue serving all children and families.”

Conservatives reacted with rage to the lawsuit. “Bonta needs to be turned out of office. California attorney general sues Rady Children’s Hospital for curtailing gender-affirming care,” one post to social media read, calling out the California AG.
