“By the Grace of God”: Actor Says He’s 55 Years Sober by Thanks God for Help, Sparks Tidal Wave of Stories of Sobriety

Actor Danny Trejo, the legendary tough guy who generally plays the same hard-edged brute on the silver screen, just took to Elon Musk’s X to post a picture of himself smiling and tell his fans that he is now 55 years sober, having overcome substance addiction with the Lord God’s help.

Mr. Trejo shared that message in an encouraging note to fans capped off by a picture of him looking like a friendly grandpa instead of an on-screen tough guy, saying, “I’m 55 years clean and sober today by the grace of God! I’ve done this one day at a time, and for anyone out there struggling YOU CAN TOO!”

    Check that out here:

Commenting on Mr. Trejo’s post, fans left messages of support and congratulations. One, for example, said, “Thank you for showing some of us there can be light at the end of the tunnel. <3” Another added, “Belated Happy Birthday Mr. Trejo, I know you to be a good man. I remember you growing up when I was a teenager and I lived in Austin, TX seeing you at the Omni Hotel where my mother worked in one of the offices, you we’re polite, respectful, and everything I wish to be as a man. A thousand blessings 🙏 to you sir. 🫡”

Others joined in to share their own stories of sobriety and the fight to overcome addiction. For example, one commenter said, “Just started my sober journey, Danny. Congratulations to you on yours, brother, and thank you for being yet another inspirational person and reason for me to keep my resolve, a day at a time😌❤️‍🩹”

Similarly, another commenter on his post said, “Hats off, I’ve now been sober and clean for 8 years, navigating through life’s challenges day by day. May your journey grant you 55 more years of sober and clean triumphs. Disfruta tu trade!”

Joining in, another chimed in with his own story of becoming sober, saying, “congratulations, Danny, my Date was May 23, 1977 – had way too much fun that evening. Strictly medicinal purposes now. Bottle of Everclear 190 lasts 3 years. Only pain medication I ever use and then only with Dr’s knowledge. Broken neck in aircraft accident causes a lot of pain C-5 to C-7 arthritis. You are my Hero! Know you hurt worse than I do and you use nothing.”

Sadly, one commenter on his post said that her brother tried to get sober but was unable to stick with the program, writing, “Danny, my brother tried but could not stick with it. He died in 2014 at 55 yrs old – by himself and had been dead for 3 days until he was found. I got him help in Santa Monica back in 1998. He did well for a time. He had serious issues. It’s not that cut and dry. My brother was sexually abused as a kid and would not get help via therapy after many talks we had as adults. He was ashamed. Drugs were used to help with his inner pain/torment. How many are out there like my late brother?“
