In a story out of a movie, a burglary crew in Los Angeles broke into a money storage facility on Easter Sunday, 2024, and got away with a whopping $30 million in cash. The theft was not discovered until Monday morning. According to media reports on the matter, the heist was one of the largest such incidents the city of Los Angeles has ever seen.
According to Fox News Digital, which reported on the shocking incident, the crew of burglars broke into the Los Angeles GardaWorld money storage facility. Based in Sylmar, which is a suburban neighborhood in California’s beautiful San Fernando Valley, the facility stores tens of millions of dollars in cash.
ABC 7, reporting on the shocking incident, said that the thieves were somehow able to make it through the facility’s roof undetected. Their entry via that route helped them make it through without setting off alarms. Once inside the facility, they were able to make it to the money storage area, which ABC 7 reports could have been a vault, without setting off any internal alarms.
They then made off with about $30 million dollars, and the facility owner didn’t discover the robbery or even entry until Monday morning. Further, ABC 7 reports that an aerial camera captured what appears to be a hole in the side of the building. Boarded up with a pile of debris near it, ABC 7 reported that the damage to the side of the building could be related to the Sunday theft.
Due to the size of the theft, which law enforcement authorities believe likely involved a crew of some size, given the complexity of the break-in, the Los Angeles Police Department is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate the case. Though the exact amount stolen is not known, ABC 7 reports, the theft is “believed to be one of the biggest heists in L.A. history.”
Commenting on the incident to ABC 7, one employee who wished to remain anonymous said, “It’s just mind blowing that you would never suspect it.” Continuing, the anonymous employee added, “$30 million in the Valley, gone. How? Why? I’m still trying to process it. Was it an inside job? Was it just one person? Was it a group? You know, there’s a lot of questions.”
