Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia has, following the recent chaos caused in her state by Antifa, the far-left group that often acts like a domestic insurgency, pledged to introduce a bill to the US Congress that, if passed, would declare Antifa to be a terrorist organization.
MTG announced that bill when speaking to Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson, telling him that “Anifa is the ground troops of the Democratic party” and that “they never get prosecuted. That’s because, well we know the truth, it’s the Democrats in control.”
Continuing, she went on to pledge action against the group, saying “Well it’s time to do something about Antifa and that’s why I’m going to introduce legislation to declare Antifa as domestic terrorists. Because they need to be taken apart. We need to investigate exactly who they are, who funds them.”
She also said, during the interview “They are not anti-fascists. They are the fascists. Not only do they attack police, but they defend the drag queens targeting our children with Drag Queen Storytime. They go after people when they are not vaccinated and demand they get vaccinated and wear masks during the so-called pandemic.”
Greene then shared a video of her making those comments with the caption being a renewed pledge to introduce the anti-Antifa legislation, saying “It’s time to declare Antifa a domestic terrorist organization. Tonight on Tucker Carlson, I announced I will introduce legislation to do just that.”

When you watch videos of what happened in Atlanta over the weekend, Rep. Greene’s description of Antifa seems more correct than incorrect. Here area few of those striking images and videos of Antifa attacks on the city:

RAND wrote a report on the ability of the government to declare Antifa a terror organization in the summer of 2020 after Trump tweeted about doing so, describing the problems with and possibilities of that approach, saying:
“Antifa’s designation could raise broader questions about U.S. counterterrorism laws. The United States has no list of domestic terrorist organizations, only a Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) list. Antifa does not clearly meet the definition of the F, the T, or the O—it is primarily domestic, it is unclear whether their acts of violence rise to crimes of terrorism, and it is a loosely oriented movement.
“None of these issues are necessarily prohibitive in designating it as an FTO. Groups like Antifa clearly more closely meet the definition of domestic terrorism, but the only requirement for being considered “foreign” terrorism would be to have some means that transcends national boundaries. Antifa protestors have been active in the UK and elsewhere, and even its name—anti-fascist—suggests an international orientation against the roots of white supremacy groups in past Fascist governments in Germany, Austria, and Italy. This would likely be a sufficient transnational angle to designate Antifa, given there is no clear standard.
“Similarly, there is no requirement for how structured or codified an organization must be for designation. Counterterrorism laws have been used against Americans even when they have had no direct ties to FTOs, for example when simply acting consistently with the ideology of an FTO. So it is not unreasonable to think that Antifa could be both designated, and used as the justification for prosecutions, even if it has no card-carrying members.”
That analysis of whether the government could designate Antifa as an FTO came after then-President Trump tweeted “The United States of America will be designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization“.
