In a stunning and hugely important turn of events, Judge Jose “Joel” Cano, a Democrat New Mexico Magistrate Judge, has been arrested by the FBI following the jaw-dropping revelation that he and his wife had been harboring an illegal alien who was known for his Tren de Aragua ties in their home.
For context, Judge Cano had already resigned in disgrace after Homeland Security Investigations raiding his home and caught the illegal alien gangster, Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, in his house, as the American Tribune previously reported. Lopez was not just an illegal and gang member, but also had illegally obtained weapons that he was caught on tape brandishing in the judge’s home.
But now, after resigning, Judge Cano has faced a stiff response from the Trump Administration: federal agents raided the home of and arrested Judge Cano and his wife for harboring the illegal alien gangster, charging them not just with the harboring of him, but also with evidence tampering, as reported by Fox News Digital.
Commenting on the matter of the arrest to Fox News Digital, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem said, “Under President Trump, we have arrested over 150,000 aliens—including more than 600 members of the vicious Tren de Aragua gang,” She added, “If you are here illegally and break the law, we will hunt you down, arrest you and lock you up. That’s a promise.”
Also commenting on the matter, after the illegal alien was linked to Tren de Aragua and guns of his were found in the home of April Cano, the daughter of the judge, was ICE Field Office Director John Fabbricatore, who spoke about the matter to local media outlet to WPMI.
He first noted that the county has long had an illegal immigration problem, saying, “Doña Ana County has been a hotbed of illegal immigration and drug trafficking, human smuggling for many, many years.” He then noted how concerning it is that a judge would be involved in protecting an illegal alien gangster, saying, “To see that a judge would allow this to happen. It’s very concerning. It’s concerning. What else has the judge been doing?”
Further, Amy Barela, Chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, told the Las Cruces Sun-News, back when Judge Cano resigned and was stripped of the ability to ever again hold a judgeship, “The people of New Mexico are tired of a system where the powerful don’t play by their own rules. We demand real accountability for Judge Cano’s connection to a gang-affiliated criminal and full transparency on how our judiciary is being held to the same laws as the rest of us. Enough is enough.” That accountability now appears to have come, with the federal agents arresting him.

As a reminder, President Trump declared Tren de Aragua a terrorist organization.”Tren de Aragua (TdA) is a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization with thousands of members, many of whom have unlawfully infiltrated the United States and are conducting irregular warfare and undertaking hostile actions against the United States,” he said in a mid-March proclamation.
Continuing, he said, “TdA operates in conjunction with Cártel de los Soles, the Nicolas Maduro regime-sponsored, narco-terrorism enterprise based in Venezuela, and commits brutal crimes, including murders, kidnappings, extortions, and human, drug, and weapons trafficking. TdA has engaged in and continues to engage in mass illegal migration to the United States to further its objectives of harming United States citizens, undermining public safety, and supporting the Maduro regime’s goal of destabilizing democratic nations in the Americas, including the United States.”
