A total of 24 people were arrested and 13 parents cited during yet another “teen takeover” event that took place at a popular Uptown Charlotte park on June 20, 2026. The teens gathered at Romare Bearden Park, located close by the Charlotte Knights stadium where they caused mass chaos and disorder. Police said that over 200 teenagers met at the park leading to the deployment of additional law enforcement resources in order to maintain order and disperse the crowd.

Out of the 24 individuals who were arrested, 23 of them were actual teenagers. A total of 13 parents received citations for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. One firearm was seized during the event. “The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has a zero‑tolerance policy for criminal activity, including violations of the Youth Protection Ordinance,” Chief of Police Estella D. Patterson went on to say.

“When juveniles violate this ordinance, we intend to hold them and their parents accountable,” she added. Some of the charges issued following the arrests include open container violations, carrying a concealed weapon, trespassing, reckless driving, curfew violations, impeding traffic, and disorderly conduct. Cam Guterwill, a resident who lives close to the park, watched the takeover unfold from his home.

“There was just a huge group of kids out taking over,” Guterwill told WCNC. “It’s just you feel unsafe, you don’t know what they’re gonna do. They’re very young.” The report then revealed that CMPD is going to be taking a new approach this summer to address the growing trend of “teen takeovers.” Captain Eric Tran-Thompson, who is the head of the police department’s Juvenile Accountability and Diversion Empowerment team, says school resource officers will play a pivotal role in responding to the gatherings.

“We’re forming a team of school resource officers directly responsible for addressing some of these teen takeovers throughout the summer,” Tran-Thompson went on to say. “They know the teens better, they have a relationship already built with them.” The captain is also urging parents to be more active in knowing the whereabouts of their children during the summer months.

“Know where your child is, monitor their social media, know who they’re hanging out with,” he stated. “Your 11-year-old, 12-year-old, or your 15-year-old shouldn’t be uptown at midnight by themselves. Just take some responsibility, some ownership of where your child is.” Under the current curfew ordinance in the city of Charlotte, kids who are under 13 must be off the streets by 10 p.m.

Teens between the ages of 13 and 15 are to be home by 11 p.m. The incident on Saturday is not an isolated incident. There have been a number of these events taking place across the country and one of several that hit the uptown area of Charlotte over the last several weeks. CMPD is planning to maintain a heavy presence through the July Fourth holiday.

Chief Patterson also reiterated the department’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for criminal activity. An individual on social media platform X encountered one of these gatherings following a concert. “I saw this first hand Saturday evening after Chris Stapleton concert. We were walking to the car. It was unbelievable the number of underage teens just looking for trouble. Both my husband and I saw several young kids with knives in their hands. Cops were lined up for blocks, but I couldn’t wait to get past these teens. They were surrounding the entire uptown area around BOA stadium! It was horrific! Saturday marks our last night in uptown spending any money! I won’t do it ever again,” the user shared.
