In yet more big news out of Congress, the House Ethics Committee has taken a major step towards removing Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) from Congress over the dozens of crimes of which she is accused, most of which stem from various forms of fraud and corruption, as it has found that she committed the crimes of which she is accused.
As background, disgraced Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick faces a 15-count federal indictment for allegedly conspiring with her brother and others to steal $5 million in FEMA overpayments from a 2021 COVID-19 vaccination contract, laundering the funds through multiple accounts, and funneling portions into her congressional campaign via straw donors and personal expenses. Additionally, the Democrat faces tax fraud charges for false deductions.
So, the House Ethics Committee began an investigation into her. That investigation, which lasted for a whopping three years, concluded on Friday, March 27, when the committee found Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick guilty on 25 ethics charges related to the allegations made by the Department of Justice.
Cherfilus-McCormick, for her part, has repeatedly and staunchly denied wrongdoing. In fact, despite the slew of evidence facing her, she has pleaded not guilty in the separate but related federal criminal case against her. Releasing a statement on the matter, she said, “I look forward to proving my innocence. Until then, my focus remains where it belongs: showing up for the great people of Florida’s 20th District who sent me to Washington to fight for them.”
Congressman Greg Steube, posting about the matter on X, began by celebrating the fact that the House Ethics Committee, “Finally, the Ethics Committee agreed that Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has committed 25 ethics violations, including money laundering, fraud, and election violations.”
Continuing, the congressman noted that this whole farce has been allowed to go on for far too long, with the congresswoman remaining in Congress despite “blatant corruption.” He said, “This long-overdue step follows a process that has been unnecessarily dragged out for months, during which her blatant corruption and abuse of taxpayer dollars have been allowed to fester.”
Adding to that, he argued that had the congresswoman had any sense of decency, she would have resigned when she was first indicted on dozens of counts, yet she refused to do so and so the Ethics Committee has to hold her accountable. He said, “She should have resigned after being indicted on 15 federal counts, but she has refused to be accountable for her criminality.”

He then argued that the sort of outright fraud and corruption of which she has been found guilty by the House Ethics Committee is a major problem because it is such an egregious breach of public trust. He said, “As I have said before, this represents one of the most egregious breaches of public trust, particularly for her constituents in Florida.”
Concluding, he wrote that he will vote to expel her when the appropriate time in the process for that drastic step comes, saying, “I will proceed with my motion to expel her once the final sanctions hearing concludes and the committee makes a recommendation to the House.”
