Recently, Joe Biden attempted to deliver a speech regarding abortion laws in Manassas, Virginia. However, pro-Palestine protestors interrupted the event, slamming the president for his stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East.
Biden has fielded criticism from progressive Democrats, siding with Palestine over Israel in the conflict, particularly calling out his support of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A protestor in support of Palestine aggressively shouted at Biden, “Genocide, Joe! How many kids have you killed today?”
Unsurprisingly, the crowd of liberal Biden supporters responded to the protestor with a “Four more years.” Biden even accused the protestor of being a “MAGA Republican.” Undeterred by the president and the loud crowd of Democrats, another individual shouted at Biden, “Israel kills two mothers every hour!”
President Biden is unquestionably walking a tightrope within his party as Democrats are essentially split on the Israel-Hamas War. According to recent data, almost half of Democrats disapprove of the president’s response to the ongoing Middle-Eastern conflict. A poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that roughly 50% of Democrats approve of Biden’s response while 40% do not.
And that could be seen in the Manassas rally, as the pro-Palestine protesters kept interrupting Biden during his speech, leading to a war of chants between his supporters, who chanted “four more years,” and those on the side of the Palestinians who were trying to interrupt him.
Watch that here:
The American Tribune reported late last year on the growing divide within the Democratic party between the far-left members of the “Squad” and President Biden. The squad, which includes members such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and Rep. Ilhan Omar, has garnered a reputation for firmly supporting Palestine.
“U.S. policy is essentially that Netanyahu has no achievable goals in Gaza and a ground invasion risks regional war, including potential US troops. And also we should give him $14 billion in weapons with no restrictions, and say there are no red lines as he bombs refugee camps. See how this doesn’t add up?” Omar said.
Similarly, Tlaib said in a statement, “The American people do not support funding for war crimes— like the use of white phosphorus bombs-and are calling for a ceasefire. As the Israeli government carries out ethnic cleansing in Gaza, President Biden is cheering on Netanyahu, whose own citizens are protesting his refusal to support a ceasefire. We must be laser focused on saving lives, no matter their faith or ethnicity.”
According to recent reports, Biden has been in discussion with Netanyahu on the possibility of a “two-state” solution for Palestine. Last Friday, Biden spoke to the Israeli Prime Minister on the concept of creating an independent Palestinian state, where one path could involve a non-militarized government.
Biden indicated that it would be possible to work out such a solution with Netanyahu in office. “I think we’ll be able to work something out … I think there’s ways in which this could work,” the president told reporters.
“The president also discussed his vision for a more durable peace and security for Israel fully integrated within the region and a two state-solution with Israel’s security guaranteed,” the White House said in a statement on the meeting with Netanyahu.
