President Joe Biden recently appeared on MSNBC for an interview and, during that interview, declared that Hunter Biden has done nothing wrong.
Specifically, Biden told MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle, “First of all, my son has done nothing wrong. I trust him. I have faith in him. Later in the interview, Biden declared himself honorable despite the building scandal, saying, “I have acquired a hell of a lot of wisdom. And know more than the vast majority of people – I’m more experienced than anybody who has ever run for the office. And I think I’ve proven myself to be honorable as well as also effective.”
Rep. James Comer would disagree, announcing on Wednesday that he was in the “beginning stages” of his investigation. Speaking on what he and the committee have found so far and what they think they will find as the investigation ramps up, Rep. Comer said, “I don’t think anyone in America … would think that it’s just a coincidence that nine Biden family members have received money. We believe that the president has been involved in this from the very beginning. Obviously, we’re going to continue to look.”
Politico, reporting on the situation and what the GOP claims to have found in relation to the Biden family, along with what it is now claiming, said:
A 30-plus-page memo from GOP Oversight staff, a copy of which was obtained by POLITICO, focused on payments linked to Romania and China. According to the GOP memo based on bank records the committee has obtained, Biden family members, business associates or related companies received more than $10 million in total from companies run by foreign nationals.
The memo detailed payments to Biden family members and asserted that “it is not credible” that the president wasn’t aware of his family’s business efforts given the total size of the payments. It also did not show any way in which Biden’s decisions were influenced by those agreements or that he had direct knowledge of them.
Abbe Lowell, a lawyer for Hunter Biden, disputed Rep. Comer’s characterization of what Hunter Biden was up to and what Comer claims to have found, saying, “Rep. Comer … has spent the last five months making wild predictions without proof, asking inane questions out loud and falling short every time — including today. Today’s so-called ‘revelations’ are retread, repackaged misstatements of perfectly proper meetings and business by private citizens.”
In addition to Rep. Comer’s investigation, there is a decision by Justice Department officials looming on whether to charge Hunter Biden as part of a yearslong investigation related to his possible violations of both tax and gun laws.
The DOJ’s probe into Hunter Biden is long-running, having begun in 2018 and initially centered on Hunter’s finances, particularly in regard to both his overseas business ties and consulting work. The focus of the investigation later shifted to whether he lied on his taxes and a form relating to the purchase of a firearm, as it appears that he lied about his use of drugs, namely crack-cocaine, when buying a handgun.
