Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) recently slammed President Donald Trump, suggesting he is a “dictator” who has brought on a “constitutional crisis” in America. Omar argued that President Trump is attempting to subvert the authority of Congress and undermine Democracy. The representative also criticized Trump’s agenda for firing masses of bureaucrats in what the administration has characterized as a bloated civil service.
The progressive congresswoman began her monologue, lamenting, “It is really, really a sad day in America. We are witnessing a constitutional crisis.” Insinuating Trump is a dictator, she added, “We talked about Trump wanting to be a dictator on day one, and here we are. This is what the beginning of dictatorship looks like when you got the Constitution and you install yourself as the sole power. That is how dictators are made.”
Furthermore, Omar suggested that Trump and Elon seek to undercut the Democratic mechanisms built into the federal government. “What Trump and Elon and all of their cronies are trying to do is take away the constitutional power of Congress,” she said. “We get to decide. We have the power of the purse. We get to decide where money is allocated, and it’s the executive’s power to make sure that that money gets to where it needs to get.”
The Minnesota Democrat then complained about Trump’s firing of bureaucrats, a long-time promise he appears to be fulfilling. Omar claimed that the move is actually costing the U.S. taxpayer instead of making the government more efficient. “When we talk about civil servants being let go. What we are talking about is not saving money,” she said.
Omar added, “It’s essentially saying they can get paid while they’re home and their work doesn’t get done on behalf of the American people, it is US taxpayers who are being ripped off. It is US taxpayers who are not getting the resources that we paid into. So I ask the American people, do you want people at home and getting a paycheck and not providing services to you? The answer is no. Do you want the executive making the only decisions in this country, or do you want the elected representatives that you sent to Washington making those policies?”
Addressing the closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) headquarters, Omar explained she is “exceptionally upset” by the move. On Monday, the organization closed the headquarters to agency personnel after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.) seeks to attain control over the foreign aid organization.
“I am exceptionally upset about USAID. I lived in a refugee camp for four years as a child, surviving Civil War. It is the essential programs that USAID provided that kept my family and I fat and safe. It is the resources that so many people around the world rely on and it is our soft power, often times people interact with our country through the military that does not create love for us, and it certainly does not keep us safe,” she said.

An email to USAID staffers read, “At the direction of Agency leadership, the USAID headquarters at the Ronald Reagan building in Washington, D.C. will be closed to Agency personnel on Monday, February 3, 2025.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is acting director of the agency, said, “There are a lot of functions of USAID that are going to continue to be part of American foreign policy, but it has to be aligned with American foreign policy.”
