The Republican-controlled House of Representatives under Speaker of the House Mike Johnson just voted to approve the formalization of the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, with House Committees now having more power to compel documents and subpoena witnesses as they look into whether Biden profited from his son Hunter’s overseas business dealings. Predictably, Biden raged in response, attacking Republicans for not helping advance his agenda and focusing on the impeachment effort instead.
Beginning his statement, President Biden accused the Republican-controlled House of Representatives of not focusing on important issues and focusing on the impeachment inquiry effort instead, with the president pointing to Israel and Ukraine as needing help that the GOP is unwilling to provide.
“The American people need their leaders in Congress to take action on important priorities for the nation and world. On Tuesday, I met with the President of Ukraine, who is leading his people in a battle for freedom against Russian aggression. He came to America to ask us for help. Yet Republicans in Congress won’t act to help. The people of Israel are in a battle against terrorists, and they are waiting for our help. Yet Republicans in Congress won’t act to help,” he said.
Continuing, Biden then bizarrely blamed Republicans for the massive problem at the southern border remaining unsolved, saying, “We have to address the situation at our southern border, and I am determined to try to fix the problem. We need funding to strengthen border security, but Republicans in Congress won’t act to help.”
Biden then went on to blame the House Republicans for the various economic issues that have been inflicted on America under his presidency, particularly the inflation situation and steady anxiety about the state of the economy.
Making those claims, he said, “We need to continue our progress on the economy and make sure inflation keeps going down and job growth keeps going up. That means avoiding self-inflicted economic crises like a government shutdown, which Republicans in Congress are driving us toward in just a few weeks because they won’t act now to fund the government and critical priorities to make life better for the American people.”
Then, attacking the Republicans yet more, President Biden raged and characterized the GOP caucus as being more focused on petty issues and infighting than advancing those “pressing challenges,” by which he meant items on his agenda like the Ukraine aid.
Biden said, “There is a lot of work to be done. But after wasting weeks trying to find a new Speaker of the House and having to expel their own members, Republicans in Congress are leaving for a month without doing anything to address these pressing challenges.”
Concluding, Biden claimed in an even more angry section of the statement, saying that he is the one trying to fix issues for Americans and that the GOP is lying about him and using those lies to attack him instead of focusing on what is important.
He said, “I wake up every day focused on the issues facing the American people – real issues that impact their lives, and the strength and security of our country and the world. Unfortunately, House Republicans are not joining me. Instead of doing anything to help make Americans’ lives better, they are focused on attacking me with lies. Instead of doing their job on the urgent work that needs to be done, they are choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt that even Republicans in Congress admit is not supported by facts. The American people deserve better. I know what I am going to remain focused on. I would invite Republicans in Congress to join me.”
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, for his part, commented on the impeachment inquiry after the formalization vote, saying, “Today, the House took a critical step in our investigation into serious matters involving President Joe Biden by formally opening an impeachment inquiry. As President Biden continues to stonewall lawful Congressional subpoenas, today’s vote of the full House of Representatives authorizing the inquiry puts us in the strongest position to enforce these subpoenas in court.”
Continuing, Speaker Johnson added, “We do not take this responsibility lightly and will not prejudge the investigation’s outcome. But the evidentiary record is impossible to ignore. We have seen witness testimony and bank records showing millions of dollars flowing to the Biden family from foreign adversaries. Witnesses have testified about the President’s numerous interactions with his family’s foreign clients. The President and White House have repeatedly misled the public, shifted the goalposts, and stonewalled our investigation. As Chairmen Comer, Jordan and Smith have done all along, we will continue to follow the facts where they lead. The American people deserve answers. This impeachment inquiry will help us find them.”
