At Least 23 Shot Over the Weekend in Brandon Johnson’s Chicago

It was another bloody weekend in Chicago under Mayor Brandon Johnson, Chicago’s new “leader” who is proving to be just as bad, if not worse, as much-maligned former mayor Lori Lightfoot. In fact, over this past  weekend, at least 23 individuals were shot in Brandon Johnson’s Chicago.

Three of those 23 individuals who were shot died, with the first fatality occurring early on the morning of Sunday the 13th of August. The second fatality was recorded later on Sunday morning when a man was found dead, shot to death, and the third deadly shooting occurred on Sunday evening.

ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times reported the first of the three fatal shootings, noting that it occurred at 2:40 a.m. “in the 1500 block of West 18th Street.” There, a 36-year-old man was shot in the chest and, though he was able to transport himself to a local hospital, St. Anthony Hospital, he died in the medical facility and was pronounced dead.

Fewer details are known second shooting, which occurred early on the same morning, other than that a man was found shot to death “in the 700 block of South Leamington Avenue.” The only other details provided by the Chicago Sun-Times are that the unknown, 32-year-old male died after being shot at about 1:56 in the morning.

The third fatal shooting occurred later in the day, around 8:15 p.m. in the area of “5700 block of South Payne Drive.” More details are known about it. Apparently, the deadly shooting followed an argument. After the acrimonious debate, one individual involved apparently drew a firearm and opened fire upon a 16-year-old, two 18-year-olds, and a 53-year-old man. The fatality was one of the 18-year-olds; he was shot by the individual who opened fire on the crowd and later died of his gunshot wounds.

Together, the three shootings rounded out a very bloody year so far for Chicago. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, “372 victims have been killed in Chicago in 2023” through August 13th.
The bloody weekend comes alongside Mayor Johnson’s approach to tackling the city’s crime problem, an approach that’s not particularly police-centric. Describing that approach, Mayor Johnson said in the report on WGNTV, “Everybody knows that police strategy, alone, is insufficient, it’s a failure. And I don’t know how you scramble to hire people – a process that takes 18 months. Do you really want to scramble to find police officers? I don’t think we want to scramble to find anyone that requires the professional training that is needed to ensure that we are delivering adequate services for the people of Chicago.”
Other Chicago politicians have sided with Mayor Johnson against a police-centric approach, with Alderwoman Rossanna Rodriquez saying, per WGNTV, “I think the problem that we have is that we are sending every single issue to police so you’re always going to need more police when police is the only answer for everything that happens. Homelessness, send police. Mental health issues, send police. Substance abuse, send police.”
But, try as they might to find non-police approaches to crime, the bloody city grows even more drenched in the blood of its residents.
