New reports have emerged that disgraced former Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and current Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) both utilized campaign funds at resorts located in Puerto Rico during the same weekend as Gallego’s wedding, according to records from the Federal Election Commission. Gallego, who has a close friendship with Swalwell, has been desperately trying to distance himself from him in light of sexual misconduct allegations against the California Democrat.
However, the depth of their relationship is now coming to light. On June 7, 2021, Swalwell’s political operation made two expenditures at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico for a total of $1,522.11. An Instagram post from a wedding guest, which was reviewed by the UK’s Daily Mail, tagged the hotel as the location of Gallego’s wedding on that exact date.
Gallego’s campaign spent $2,000 at the Fairmont El San Juan on the same day. Gallego was serving as a member of the House of Representatives at the time. He was elected as a senator on November 2024. After this information was published on April 14, 2026, a spokesperson for Gallego provided an invoice from a donor retreat held in September in Puerto Rico showing a $2,000 charge “transferred at check-in.”
According to the Daily Mail, the spokesperson went on to claim that the invoice corresponds to the June 7 FEC disbursement. But a contract the campaign shared showed $0 paid on every deposit installment, including the one that was due on June 15. Jacques Petit, a spokesman for Gallego, shared information about the first deposit.
Petit said Gallego, a congressman at the time, made the first deposit for the September Puerto Rican retreat in May, which then showed up on the FEC report on June 7, following his wedding. “There is a difference in reporting to the FEC and spending in real-time,” Petit said in an email responding to the story. “A deposit on a hotel for a retreat months after the wedding is routine campaign activity, not splurging.”
Left-leaning publication Politico stated in 2021 that Swalwell attended Gallego’s wedding. Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) also attended the event and spent campaign funds at the Hyatt Regency totaling $1,809.79. She then spent an additional $540.93 on May 18 for a “lodging deposit” at the hotel. The Daily Mail revealed they reached out to Sanchez for a comment but did not receive a response.
Using campaign funds for personal expenses is strictly prohibited by federal law. Gallego and his wife, Sydney Barron Gallego, were marred in December 2019 in D.C. at the National Gallery of Art. They went public with their engagement later, in February 2020, just ahead of the “marriage” ceremony in Puerto Rico in June 2021.

Gallego held a press conference on April 14, 2026, where he claimed he had no knowledge of his friend Swalwell’s inappropriate behavior, though he admitted to hearing that Swalwell was “flirty.” At one point during the presser, Gallego broke down in tears, lamenting that he had “trusted” his friend. “And it hurts, the fact that he hurt a lot of people, and it pisses me off that now we all have to deal with all of his BS, his family, the poor victims that are still going to have to seek justice,” he said.
He then turned on his friend and said that he “became very good at being a predator.” Gallego then claimed that Swalwell “lied to all of us” while he served on the House Judiciary Committee, becoming a leading voice in the effort to impeach and remove President Donald Trump from office. A total of five women have accused Swalwell of rape, sexual assault, and sending unsolicited messages.
