According to a recent release from the Leon County Sheriff, Kevin Ellis, a licensed gun owner in Centerville, TX, shot a man who allegedly knocked out an elderly man in a restaurant bathroom after entering the smokehouse “in a harassing manner.”
Sheriff Ellis described the incident in an incident report posted to the department’s Facebook page in which he described what the suspect did that led to the shooting and when and where the incident occurred in his department’s jurisdiction.
Beginning, the sheriff described why his deputies were dispatched to the business and when that happened, saying, “On August 14, 2023, at 12:04 P.M, The Leon County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Woody’s Smokehouse #2, located at 947 W Saint Mary’s Street in Centerville, Texas, 75833, in reference to shots being fired inside the business.“
Continuing, he identified the suspect: “Leon County Sheriff’s Office Deputies/Investigators along with Department of Public Safety Troopers responded to the location. Surveillance video shows a suspect, later identified as Kevin Craig Anderson from Houston Texas, entering the business in a harassing manner.“
Sheriff Ellis then described what the suspect did that put the restaurant’s patrons on edge, and the attack that led to the shooting, saying, “While inside, Kevin Anderson aggressively approached several customers inside the store and then proceeded to walk into the restroom. Subsequent investigation revealed that once inside the restroom, Kevin Anderson began assaulting an elderly male knocking him unconscious onto the tile floor and continued assaulting him.”
That is, apparently, when the man legally carrying a firearm got involved in trying to stop the assault and was himself assaulted, leading to the shooting. The individual carrying the firearm was able to wound the suspect, who then fled from the smokehouse.
Describing that, Sheriff Ellis said, “A Licensed to Carry Holder attempted to intervene the assault on the unconscious victim. The License to Carry Holder was then assaulted by Kevin Anderson, knocking him to the floor and continuing to assault him. At which time the License to Carry Holder fired two rounds, striking Kevin Anderson once in the right arm. Kevin Anderson then fled from the restroom, exited the business and fled the scene in his vehicle.“
The law enforcement authorities were then able to locate the suspect and get him to a hospital: “Kevin Anderson was located parked on the shoulder of IH-45, near the 174 mile-marker. He was transported by helicopter to St. Joseph E.R. in Bryan and then later transported to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston to be treated for his injuries.”
He was not the only one needing hospitalization, however, as Sheriff Ellis also said that “One victim was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.” Which victim needed treatment was unspecified, but seems likely to have been the elderly man who was allegedly knocked unconscious by the suspect.
