Back in the spring of 2024, a very funny but also very worrisome, given what it shows about Congress, incident occurred in which Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (MTG) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC), got into a shouting match spat over a fight that originally broke out over the Biden Administration Attorney General.
The incident occurred during discussion in the House Oversight Committee about holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress over his not handing over the tape of Biden with Special Counsel Robert Hur. That turned into a discussion of the charges brought against now-President-elect Donald Trump and presided over by Judge Merchan, with some suggesting that the DOJ was involved in the charges being brought.
Then, turning up the already high mentions and starting a spat, MTG asked Democrats if they were employing Judge Juan Merchant’s daughter, an accusation of potential corruption. Rep. Jasmine Crockett was set off by the somewhat irrelevant question and fired at Greene, saying, “Do you know what we’re here for?” MTG shot back: “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”
That set off AOC, who went berserk that MTG had mentioned Rep. Crockett’s eyelashes. She bellowed, “That is absolutely unacceptable; how dare you attack the physical appearance of another person.” Greene hit back at the Democratic congresswoman, dismissive of her comments. “Are your feelings hurt?” MTG asked as AOC demanded, “Move her words down!”
“Oh girl, baby girl,” AOC said, “Don’t even play. We’re gonna move and take your words down.”AOC further demanded that Greene apologize for her comments during the angry spat, stating, “She has to apologize!” MTG refused calling on AOC to debate her, saying, “I’m not apologizing. Why don’t you debate me?”
The lawmakers then went on to debate if MTG’s words should be moved down, with AOC saying, during that spat, “No way is that being allowed” and “not today.” She added, yelling about MTG needing to make an apology, “We’re not going to do a smarmy apology. She has to actually apologize. And that needs to be up to Ms. Crockett as well. It needs to be sincere.” Check out the wild moment here:
Rep. Crockett freaked out on X (formerly Twitter) following the spat. She angrily posted, commenting on the incident and MTG’s refusal to apologize for it, “So MTG wanted to talk about my appearance in COMMITTEE?! It’s against the rules to do… She refused to apologize! The chairman ruled that it was ok…”
Continuing, Crockett then suggested that she could have gone on the attack against MTG, saying, “AND I asked for clarification about what qualifies as “engaging in personalities” & basically wanted to know if I could talk shit about her appearance as… well… y’all know what she looks like, right? PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES! This is what happens when mentally deficient people who can’t read and follow rules or just don’t give a damn… somehow end up in CONGRESS!”
