In a post to X on March 7, 2025, Libs of TikTok revealed that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had employed an illegal immigrant as her Deputy Communication Director. Diego de la Vega self-deported to Colombia after Trump entered the Oval Office. In response to the news, conservative commentators took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with AOC.
“DID YOU KNOW AOC’s campaign’s Deputy Communication Director was an illegal? He has now self-deported from the US to Colombia. Why was a sitting member of Congress employing an illegal?” explained Libs of TikTok. She was far from the only one who objected to AOC’s actions, “Majority of her staff were/are illegals and paid by US tax dollars— which is illegal. AOC should be investigated immediately,” said another account.
“Hey @AOC, aside from Diego de la Vega, how many other illegals did you have on your staff in 2024? Here’s the publicly available list of people you employed at the expense of the taxpayer from July to September 2024. You’ve also admitted Naureen Akhter entered the US illegally,” noted another user. “How were they paid? Did they have social security numbers? How did a government check and benefits flow to them? Speaking of security, how did a foreign national, here illegally get through a background check???,” one reply read.
“U.S. law under Title 8 U.S.C §1324a(a)(1)(A) prohibits hiring, recruiting, or referring undocumented immigrants for employment, with penalties for employers who knowingly employ unauthorized workers. Congress members, like any employer, must comply with these immigration laws,” noticed another user on X.
“AOC’s Deputy Comm Director ”an illegal”fled to Colombia. Hypocrisy much? A congresswoman breaking immigration laws while preaching “justice” is a slap to every law-abiding American. Clean house,no one’s above it, not even her!” said one user. Another noted that, “AOC needs to be looked at closely. First she gave lessons on avoiding ICE and now we find out she employed and Illegal to work in her government office. These are obvious things, what is AOC doing that is not so obvious?”
Diego de la Vega sat down with Migrant Insider to express his feelings about the event. “It’s bittersweet. I hadn’t left the country in 23 years — from age seven to age 30,” de la Vega said. “Now, I can’t go back to the U.S. It feels like exile. It’s a very permanent move. But my wife and I are confident we made the right decision. And, after some time, it’s been a real pleasure to be here.”
“It feels surreal to not be illegalized anymore. I don’t have to live in the shadows or constantly worry about paperwork,” he explained. “That freedom of movement is incredibly satisfying.””We were always honest with voters in New York City,” the illegal said of working with AOC. “We didn’t dumb it down or tell them what they wanted to hear. We engaged with them honestly. We listened, then explained that Alexandria was fighting for reform, but Republicans were blocking it.”

“Protections are going away, regardless of who is in the White House. The strategy hasn’t adapted to the modern era,” he explained. “Biden had a trifecta — the House, Senate and White House, but dropped the ball.” De la Vega may not be able to return to the U.S. “for many years” but added”it feels fulfilling to be home.”
