Another RINO, Rep. Chip Roy, has announced his decision to leave Congress and run for Texas Attorney General. According to a recent op-ed written by Ryan Greenstein, he argues that this may be part of a growing trend where attorney general positions serve as stepping stones to higher political office.
Previously, these roles were seen as apolitical; however, they are now exerting a wider influence. The author used the example of Jeff Landry, who moved from a one-term congressman to Louisiana’s governor via the attorney general role.
Continuing to explore this example, the author noted that Landry’s conservative tenure as attorney general elevated his profile, which allowed him to mount a successful run for the governor’s mansion in 2023. Other prominent Republicans, such as Raúl Labrador, Todd Rokita, and Tim Griffin, have followed a similar path to power.
Even the Democrats, such as Jeff Jackson and Xavier Becerra, have recognized the power of a tenure in the AG’s office. For example, Becerra used his role as California attorney general to transition into a cabinet position. Attorney generals wield significant authority, and often represent their states in high-profile litigation.
Concluding his comments, Ryan Greenstein urged voters to pay attention to AG races as these candidates may well work in a future role as a governor or senator. He says that Roy’s decision is strategic and that he is likely to reappear later.
As we previously reported, the former Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, has decided to vacate his seat in an attempt to unseat the infamous RINO Senator John Cornyn (R-TX). As we reported, recent polls have seen him trailing Paxton by nearly 22 points (50% to 28%) in a hypothetical 2026 Republican primary. According to this poll, only 27% of Texans want Cornyn to retain his seat, with many analysts attributing his dramatic fall from grace to his betrayal of conservative values.
Providing context, one writer noted, “Cornyn’s popularity in the state took a major hit during Joe Biden’s administration,” adding, “The Senator played a critical role in 2022 working to pass Biden’s gun control legislation, which funded state ‘red flag’ laws and hindered many gun purchases.”

Digging into the data, pollsters revealed how each prospective candidate would fare against a democratic challenger. PunchBowl stated, “The survey, which was conducted from April 27 to May 1 by The Tarrance Group, also tested a general election contest between each potential Republican candidate and former Democratic Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), who is mulling another Senate run. Cornyn led Allred by 6 points in the poll. Hunt was up 4 points. Paxton was down by 1 point.”
Taking to social media to celebrate the favorable poll numbers, AG Paxton stated in a May 13, 2025, post, “The @club4growth has released their 2024 rating this morning. @JohnCornyn is a D- Senator. He scored a 62 for his lack of standing up for conservative values. Texas deserves better than a D- Senator. Send him home!”
Annoyed by Cornyn, conservatives took to social media to savage the unprincipled RINO. One such comment said, “When Paxton entered the race he made the decision easy for Texans. Cornyn has repeatedly proved that he’s not truly interested in representing Texans in our government. Ken on the other hand has been fighting the establishments to protect Texans his entire political career.”
