Another National Chain Faces Boycott Threats after Sanctuary City Franchisee Refuses to Serve ICE

A post on social media platform X featuring a photo of a sign hanging in the window of a Popeyes Chicken restaurant in Minneapolis forbidding Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers from coming into the business has resurfaced and is once again going viral. The sign was allegedly hung not long after the shooting deaths of anti-ICE agitators Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

“ICE Agents Do Not Have Consent To Enter This Private Business Unless They Have A Valid Judicial Warrant. Staff Are Not Authorized To Consent Access To This Business,” the sign reads. Many have come out in favor of the sign, stating that a privately owned business has the right to deny service to a customer for any reason. This is actually true. For a privately owned business.

However, Popeyes Chicken is a chain restaurant, which means that a person can open a franchise and be licensed to sell the company’s products and services, however, they must still abide by corporate policies. And thus far, Popeye’s Chicken has not, as of this writing, developed any sort of corporate-wide policies regarding a refusal to serve ICE agents or to force workers to allow ICE into their restaurants.

Some have theorized that the main reason for the sign is to prevent immigration enforcement officials from coming into the restaurant to bust illegal aliens that might be employed at the restaurant. Others say it is connected to the shooting deaths of Pretti and Good. As of now, there has been no clarification provided by the individual franchisee or Popeye’s corporate headquarters as to why the sign was posted.

According to online publication Restaurant Business, Popeyes Chicken isn’t the only eatery in Minneapolis that is taking an anti-ICE stance. Several businesses, including Don Pablo’s Mexican Restaurant, opted to close down for a while following the deadly incidents. Good was shot and killed after using her vehicle to impede an active ICE operation, ignoring instructions to exit the car, and then attempting to run over an officer.

Pretti assaulted an officer during an anti-ICE protest and attempted to pull a concealed weapon, which led to his being shot and killed. Another restaurant in the city, Mothership Pizza Paradise, announced on social media platform Instagram that they would be donating 10% of all sales at dinner time to members of their staff who were negatively impacted by the ICE crackdown on illegal immigration.

Popular chef Sean Sherman’s restaurant, Owmani, located just three miles from where Good was killed, posted that they would donate 10% of their sales to the woman’s family. The establishment stated in a post on Instagram, “We hold Renee in our hearts and send love, strength and calm to her family for their horrific unnecessary loss.”

“Chipotle, meanwhile, responded to a proposed boycott circulating on social media after investor Bill Ackman of Pershing Square Capital Management donated $10,000 to an online fundraiser for ICE agent Jonathan Ross, who shot and killed Good. Ackman confirmed the donation in a statement on X. He noted that he also had intended to donate to a fundraiser set up to support Good’s family, but he said it had closed before he was able to provide support,” the report said. Chipotle confirmed that Ackman is no longer a shareholder and is not affiliated with the fast-casual chain.
