According to reports, Amazon’s woke production of “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has recently endured a significant decline in viewership as the second season has debuted. Estimates indicate that just over 900,000 households watched the second season’s first episode within the first four days of the second season kicking off.
To put this figure in perspective, 1.8 million households reportedly viewed the first season’s debut episode within three days, representing a notable drop-off in viewership. However, Amazon does not publicly release viewership metrics, so it is unclear if these estimates reflect the actual viewership metrics for “The Rings of Power.”
Furthermore, the seeming pullback in audience interest is also troubling news given reports suggesting it cost Amazon over $1 billion to produce and market the new show. The latest installments in the “Lord of the Rings” story have also received criticism for prioritizing politics and social commentary over creating an engaging story. As a result, many J.R.R Tolkien fans have felt alienated from the once-great works of the author.
Across the entertainment industry, reports seem to indicate a massive backlash against woke content in streaming services and the box office. The American Tribune reported that the summer box office experienced another year-over-year decline, dragged down by a slew of woke movie titles. However, a handful of non-woke films, such as “Twisters,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and others, have enjoyed smashing success at the box office.
In other news related to fans rejecting woke entertainment, the newest show in the Star Wars franchise, “The Acolyte,” was canceled after just one season that received abysmal audience reviews and incessant criticism online for its socially and politically charged writing. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the show had an audience rating of just 18%, making it one of the lowest-rated pieces of Star Wars entertainment in franchise history.
Fans were so angered by “The Acolyte” that some started a petition to “de-canonize” the show so as not to associate it with the legendary works of Star Wars creator George Lucas. Die-hard fans have signed the petition, lamenting the franchise’s direction under Disney’s ownership.
The petition reads, “Like so many fans of Star Wars, I found the show the acolyte absolutely frustrating. For some it might’ve been the abysmal writing, the ever-changing character motivations, or the awkward cinematography and strange jump cuts. The show was completely misdirected. For others could be the multiple ways the show breaks canon, jangles keys of established characters damaging them in the future or the way the show makes the prophecy of the chosen one completely insignificant. Help me show Disney that we want to reset the prequel era back to George’s original vision that I know so many of us love.”
“As a long time SW fan, I care about the stories and the characters created by George Lucas. I hate seeing their stories being trashed and ret-conned by creators that hate the very existence of George Lucas’s original story and his characters. They can’t create so they want to destroy,” one Star Wars fan wrote about the show.
