A resident of Haines City, Florida, taught an alleged home intruder why breaking into a home with an armed resident inside it is a bad idea, shooting the suspected burglar four times and sending him to the hospital.
That incident occurred early Friday morning at around 1:45 am. The homeowner lives in the home with his girlfriend and their small puppy, so it was much to his surprise that he found two strangers standing in his kitchen in the wee hours of the morning.
Fearing for his life and the life of his girlfriend, the homeowner, who is also a concealed carry license holder, drew his 9mm Glock handgun and fired five rounds at the suspected burglar closest to him. Four of the shots were aimed true and hit the suspect.
The terrified homeowner then left the scene of the shooting, his house, and called 911 while driving to the Haines City Police Department. The police were able to stop him before he arrived at the station and one officer stayed with him while others when to check out the residence.
The shot, suspected burglar, a man named Yriek Tramaine Washington, also a resident of Haines City, was no longer in the house. As he had been hit by four 9mm rounds, however, he left a trail that the police were able to follow with the help of a K-9 unit.
The police, with the help of a K-9 officer named Cash, tracked Tyriek to Boomerang Park.
There, he was found with incriminating evidence and four bullet holes in him. The incriminating evidence was property of the homeowner, which he had with him from the burglary.
The officers who found Tyried then performed lifesaving measures, keeping him alive long enough to be flown to Osceola Regional Medical Center. He is now in critical but stable condition (imagine the resources being expended with little hope of repayment to keep a burglar alive!)
Tyriek is now being charged with burglary of a residence, which is a second-degree felony, along with grand theft, which is a third-degree felony. Unsurprisingly, Tyriek is far from being a valuable citizen and has a long arrest history that includes burglary, theft, loitering and prowling, resisting an officer, and drug possession.
Haines City Police Chief Greck Goreck, speaking about the incident, said “When a person breaks the sanctity of a person’s home, the average person would rightly conclude their purpose was evil. The homeowner had every right to take the action he did in this case based on the circumstances.”
