Alaskan U.S. House candidate Nick Begich III flipped the state’s congressional seat after defeating Democratic incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola. Decision Desk HQ called the race as Begich had received over 152,000 votes compared to Peltola’s roughly 143,000 with 92 percent of the votes counted. The victory boosts the GOP slim majority in the House.
Commenting on his victory, Begich said in a statement to Must Read Alaska, “This victory belongs to the people of Alaska. Our state has immense potential, and now is the time to responsibly unlock the resources that make Alaska a cornerstone of America’s path to prosperity.”
Furthermore, Begich took to X, expressing his anticipation to serve his constituents in Washington, D.C. “The race for Alaska’s sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives has now been called – Alaskans have spoken. It will be the honor of a lifetime to have the opportunity to serve as your voice in Congress,” he said.
Begich continued, “The path forward begins with a unified understanding of what Alaska can do for the rest of our nation. Together, we will deliver results for Alaska, creating long-term jobs, protecting our way of life, and playing our part to put America back on track. Alaska’s resources are not only a blessing for the people of our state – they are vital to the strength and independence of our entire nation.”
The incoming representative emphasized a message of unity, vowing to represent every member of his state. “We must work together – across our geographies and communities – to unlock Alaska’s potential and bring meaningful opportunity to every Alaskan. The challenges we have faced are real, but so is our resolve as we work to overcome them,” he added.
Building on this message, Begich continued, “Whether Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, AIP, or Independent; whether on one side of an issue or another, thank you to the thousands of Alaskans who worked so hard to be involved in this election effort. The marketplace of ideas and the campaign process, as challenging as it can be, brings issues into focus and highlights areas where we need attention.” He maintained, “To that end, I hope you’ll send your comments and ideas to [email protected] as we move over the next several weeks toward the 119th Congress.”
However, Peltola’s campaign sent out a fundraising letter claiming the race wasn’t over. “Democrat Mary Peltola is closing the gap over her Republican challenger, Nick Begich III, with every new batch of votes counted,” the letter read. “With more than 20,000 votes still left to be counted, Mary has a narrow path to close the gap and win! But in a race this close, every single vote counts! Final results likely won’t be known until November 20th, when the ranked-choice results are tabulated and released.”
Peltola asserted, “Our voter protection team is on the ground fighting to ensure that every Alaskan’s vote is counted and their voice is heard. Can we count on you to rush a donation today to ensure we have what it takes to fight for every last vote and help Mary close the gap?“
