Adele, the British pop star who quickly rose to fame and prominence after being discovered in 2006, shortly after she finished school, recently revealed that she has stopped drinking and is trying to move towards sobriety after being a “borderline alcoholic” in her 20s (she is now 35).
That came while she spoke at her show in Las Vegas over the past weekend, during which she told her fans about how she has now been sober for three and a half months, though she also admitted that she if finding her newfound sobriety “boring” and still “misses alcohol.”
Speaking to the crowd about that new aspect of her life, Adele said, “I stopped drinking maybe like three and a half months ago. It’s boring. I mean, I was literally borderline alcoholic for quite a lot of my twenties, but I miss it so much. I cut out caffeine.”
Then, joking and talking to a fan who had been drinking for all of the day, Adele joked that she was “very jealous” of the fan’s drink, a whiskey sour, telling the fan, “So enjoy your whiskey sour. I’m very, very jealous.”
Describing how she drifted toward drinking more during the Covid lockdowns, Adele said, “I remember when I came here in Covid, in lockdown, it was 11am and I was definitely like four bottles of wine in – like we all were. I said in 2020 that I wanted to put my album out. And we were all at home just drunk basically.”
She also spoke about her family, telling the crowd, “This week my son turns 11 years old. Can you believe that? We have got a busy week coming celebrating him. He is very much like me because I take my birthday very seriously.”
Continuing, she added, “So it is a whole week or a month celebration which I think everyone should treat their birthday like. From a very young age he seems to have adopted the same point of view, which isn’t quite as fun. He is my son and obviously I adore him and he is like ‘can I do this and do that.’”
She next said, “I am like ‘that is very expensive. You are 11 shouldn’t we be having a tea party still?’ But you know eleven year-olds in 2023 are like going on 25? He is more savvy in every way than I am and I ever have been or ever will be. That is my week So I guess my update next week will be, being a bullied mother probably!”
This is the second time recently that Adele has tried sobriety on for size. Previously, she told Oprah Winfrey in a special CBS interview that she “stopped drinking” in 2021 following the death of her father from bowel cancer and her divorce from her ex-husband Simon Konecki.
