Far-left activist and actor John Leguizamo took out, on Sunday, June 9, a full-page ad in the New York Times, calling in the advertisement for those voting on the Emmy nominations to vote for “non-white artists” in the name of inclusion. He then doubled down on the ad in a post on X (formerly Twitter), admitting that many people are tired of the DEI messaging but then pushing it regardless.
In the post on X about the ad, Leguizamo, who is now 63 years old, said that “white people” are “over-represented” in the top reaches of economic and cultural life, and so people need to stand up for those who are currently “not included,” though what he meant by “not included” in a free economy was unclear, other than that he wants the top jobs and positions to go to non-white people.
He first wrote, commenting on the increasing tiredness with “inclusion” efforts and why he took out the ad, saying, “I know everyone is exhausted about inclusion, but not us who are not included. So that’s why I took this ad out in the NYTimes. White peoples (sic) are only 58.9% of the population but over represented in top positions across the board.”
Continuing, he claimed that white people are overrepresented in the top positions and that America is “better” when it is inclusive. He said, “They are the decision makers in tech, banking, corporations, medicine and streamers and Hollywood! America is better when it is inclusive. It is more profitable. It is more creative! Let’s not give up. I’m still woke! Are you?”
In the NYT ad itself, Leguizamo, who was born in Columbia, called on “Equity” for “artists of color” across “ALL categories” in the upcoming Emmy awards, saying, “Please let this be the year we finally embrace change, The year we truly find Equity, and see artists of color represented across not just one category, but ALL categories.”
Continuing, he commented on the increasing tiredness Americans have for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, though he said that was because it’s just words rather than actions, which many would argue isn’t true. he said, “I know you’re tired of hearing words like ‘inclusivity’ and ‘diversity’ – treading water while you try to understand how to put actions behind these sentiments. Look no further! It’s simple!”
He then wrote, claiming that Emmys don’t go to non-white artists because they aren’t white, “There are hundreds of prolific non-white artists who deserve to be considered for Awards this year, not because they are simply… Black, Brown, Indigenous or Asian but because they are truly great… exceptional artists who have achieved that greatness with a foot on their neck for far too long.”
Concluding, the letter said, “Let this be a start of a new era. Let us not continue to white wash our Awards shows. Instead let this year be the catalyst that inspires the Next Generation of minority and underrepresented artists… a generation who might finally see a reflection of themselves on that stage and think, ‘If they can, maybe I can too…’”
