President Donald Trump is known for his master-level trolling of his political opponents and there’s no clearer example of this than when he chose to use the drapes former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton picked out for the Oval Office when she was the first lady back in 1993. Trump hung them back up in the Oval Office during his first term, after shocking the entire country by defeating Hillary in the 2016 election.
One of the first orders of business for the Trump administration at the time was to remove the red drapes that had flanked former President Barack Obama in the Oval Office during his administration and replace them with the gold ones Hillary Clinton picked out for her husband, former President Bill Clinton, in the early 1990s.
The curtains hung in the Oval Office during Clinton’s tenure in the White House, but were put into storage when George W. Bush became president and chose a deeper color that looked more brown than gold. Obama took over and decided to go with red. When Hillary explained her reason for the color choice, she said she wanted the Oval Office to be “more dynamic, to show more energy.”
According to a report from TMZ at the time, Trump decided to not only go with the gold drapes, but reinstalled former President Ronald Reagan’s sunbeam rug and W’s gold brocade sofas. Many have theorized that the reason Trump went with the gold drapes was to communicate to Hillary that it was “curtains” for her political career, especially her presidential aspirations.
A now viral post on social media platform X has brought the incident back to the forefront. “Yes but Trump has reused the Clinton drapes in his Oval Office TWICE! Hillary picked them out for Bill’s Oval Office (a typical First Lady job is to select the drapes) and Trump overruled Melania and had them pulled from storage and hung up to troll Hillary every time she sees a picture of Trump’s Oval Office,” the post says.
The comment section was full of praise for President Trump’s master-level trolling, with one individual writing, “That is some 50 Cent level hating,” making a reference to popular early 2000s rapper 50 Cent who was famous for beefing with other mainstream rap artists of the era. Someone else referred to the president as the “Troll Master.”
One user said, “I had never heard that story, but I LOVE IT.” Another individual pointed out that there’s actually another level to the trolling that most aren’t picking up on. “In addition to the obvious trolling associated with that move, there is the subtext associated with the Clinton campaign prematurely declaring victory and ‘measuring the drapes.’ Ahhh,” the person wrote.

“This is top tier level of petty. Rent free in lib heads,” Someone said in response to the thread. Other comments referred to the president as a “true master of the game” and commented on Trump’s well-known sense of humor. “Had no idea. Absolutely love this. You know it makes her furious,” user Julie H. Wright stated.
