After the self-described socialist Zohran Mamdani was successful in his mayoral bid against the Trump-endorsed independent Andrew Cuomo, Texas Governor Greg Abbott jokingly threatened a 100% tariff on New Yorkers relocating to Texas post-Election Day.
In his own posts to Truth Social, Rump warned that a Mamdani victory would turn NYC into an “economic and social disaster,” and vowed to lash federal funds beyond the legal minimum, calling Mamdani a “communist” unfit for leadership. Additionally, Trump belittled Mamdani’s assembly record as abysmal, preferring even a successful Democrat.
In any case, Gov. Greg Abbott took to social media to make his viral joke, which gathered well over 100,000 likes on X, formerly Twitter. Abbot posted, “After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC.”
While his comments were, in all likelihood, a joke, users flocked to the comments section to send their support for this measure. Playing into the joke, one response asked, “Could we impose a reverse tariff for the RINO Republicans here in Texas that don’t move to New York?”
Even far-left candidates like Democrat Gene Wu agreed with the message. “Wait… Billionaires and Millionaires will now flee to Texas to avoid paying their fair share of public services in NY. On second thought, I agree with Governor Abbott now. Let’s tax the sh*t out of them and use the money to reduce the cost of food for Texans,” the profane leftist said.
Later, a local journalist confirmed that Abbot was speaking in jest. “Spoke to a spokesperson for Gov. Abbott who clarifies that he was clearly joking after posting on X that he was imposing a 100% tariff on anyone moving from Texas to NYC,” Brooke Taylor clarified.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump slammed Mamdani and announced a plan to address him.
Speaking about New York, he said, “It can only get worse with a communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as president, good money after bad.”
President Donald Trump continued, saying, “It is my obligation to run the nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a complete and total economic and social disaster should Mamdani win.”
Building on this point, the president said, “He was nothing as an assemblyman, ranked at the bottom of the class, and as mayor of, potentially, again, the greatest city in the world, HE HAS NO CHANCE to bring it back to its former glory!”
In another message, the President said, “It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country.”
