Joe Biden shared that ailing former president Jimmy Carter asked him to deliver the eulogy at his funeral. Carter is 98 years old and recently decided to spend his remaining time in hospice care rather than receive any further medical assistance.
“He asked me to do his eulogy – excuse me, I shouldn’t say that,” Biden said at a California fundraiser.
“I spent time with Jimmy Carter, and it’s finally caught up with him. But they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated, because they found a breakthrough.” Biden is thought to be referencing a 2015 cancer diagnosis for which Carter received treatment.
CNN reported on several recent health scares for the single-term, 39th President of the United States, which include both the 2016 cancer battle as well as “a series of health scares” again in 2019. CNN wrote:
Biden was likely referring to Carter’s long battle with cancer. In 2015, the former president announced that four spots of cancer had spread to his brain, but following treatment, he was pronounced cancer-free in December of that year.
He faced a series of health scares in 2019 and consequentially underwent surgery to remove pressure on his brain. His health woes forced him to give up his decadeslong tradition of teaching Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
Last month, the Carter Center announced that, after several short hospital stints, the former president had accepted his fate and preferred to spend his “remaining time at home.”
“After a series of short hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team,” the center released in a statement.
“Carter, who turned 98 last year, became the oldest living US president in history after the passing of George H.W. Bush, who died in late 2018 at 94,” CNN continued. “The nation’s 39th president has kept a low public profile in recent years due to the coronavirus pandemic but has continued to speak out about risks to democracy around the world, a longtime cause of his.”
Up until recently, Carter had still been leading Sunday school classes at a Georgia church.
Carter’s record as a person is noteworthy. He served in the U.S. Navy, something modern political leaders seem mostly averse to doing. He dedicated his life to service, first in the armed services and later as a politician and then statesman. Of course, however well-intentioned those latter two decisions may have been, he nevertheless lived a life on the taxpayer dime and promoted what could be seen today as far-left activist politics.
Carter helped further cement the Deep State, presiding over the creation of both the Department of Energy as well as the Department of Education. More federal power is hardly ideal.
His presidency was marred by an oil crisis and severe stagflation, and until Joe Biden came along was widely perceived as one of, if not the, worst president in generations.
He later won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in promoting “world peace,” whatever that means to folks, in 2002.
In a 2022 statement, he addressed the conflict facing Eastern Europe, releasing a statement which said:
“Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine using military and cyber weapons violates international law and the fundamental human rights of the Ukrainian people. I condemn this unjust assault on the sovereignty of Ukraine that threatens security in Europe and the entire world, and I call on President Putin to halt all military action and restore peace. The United States and its allies must stand with the people of Ukraine in support of their right to peace, security, and self-determination.”
