The 95th annual Oscars took place on Sunday, and now a video clip of model Ashely Graham interviewing Hugh Grant is going viral. While the model was excited to be at Hollywood’s annual self-gratification festival, Grant appeared to be less than thrilled about how his evening was going.
The whole interview was awkward as if Grant were part of an inside joke that Ashely Graham was unaware of. As the conversation dragged on, it was clear that Grant wanted to get away from that camera and microphone as quickly as he could.
To kick things off in the video shared on Twitter by Timothy Burke, Graham asked, “What’s your favorite thing about coming to the Oscars.” Following a pause and a split second where Grant had to hold back laughter, he said, “Well…umm. It’s fascinating, it’s ah — the whole of humanity’s here, it’s Vanity Fair.”

By this point, it was clear that the whole interview would be an awkward calamity in the funniest way, and Grant kept toying with his interviewer. In an attempt to salvage the moment, the interviewer asked, “What are you most excited to see tonight?” That exchange wound up being wonderfully award as the conversation went like this:
Graham: What are you most excited to see tonight?
Grant: To see?
Graham: Well I know that you probably watched a lot of the movies, are you excited to see anybody win, do you have your hopes up for anyone?
Grant: Not — ah, no one in particular.
Graham: Ok, well, what are you wearing tonight, then?
Grant: Just my suit.
At this point, any decent interviewer needs to realize that this is not a conversation that the other side wants to be involved in. Graham caught no inkling of disinterest from Grant and continued the hilarious dialogue, asking if Grant knew the suit’s designer. Again fighting back laughter, Grant says, “I can’t remember my tailor.”
Most will take this video as a perfect example of the importance of walking away at the right time, but Graham did no such thing. She decided to dive in for one last question, asking Grant about his role in “Glass Onion.”
Grant: I am barely in it. I am in it for three seconds.
Graham: But still, you showed up and had fun, right?
Grant: Almost.
The secondhand embarrassment felt while watching this clip is nearly unbearable. While some on the internet decided to call Hugh Grant rude for his interaction here, others kept to his defense and noted the lack of depth in the questions. One Twitter user said:
“Hugh Grant wasn’t rude like so many people have posted, I don’t think the interviewer or the people who think he was rude know Hugh Grant. Ask a stupid question get a stupid answer.”
That sums up the situation perfectly. Before you get mad at Grant for his gruffness, ask yourself why the interviewer only asked him about a movie he appeared in for a few minutes. I’d like to get out of the interview as soon as possible as well.
