Members of the GOP contingent in the Senate are attempting to flex what power they have to end the flood of welfare-dependent migrants that are flooding into the country thanks to President Joe Biden.
As background, the Trump administration implemented a regulation in early 2020 known as the “public charge” rule. That rule made it far more difficult for foreign nationals to secure green cards if they had previously used welfare programs like food stamps, Medicaid, or taxpayer-funded housing. The aim of the rule was to stop importing immigrants into America that would be reliant on the American welfare system instead of contributing positively to American greatness.
Naturally, Democrats hated the idea that importing millions of unwashed masses of future food stamp users would be more difficult, so Biden got rid of the public charge rule near immediately after entering office. That then opened the doors to welfare-using migrants, which Americans are now footing the bill for.
To combat that, the Senate GOP has introduced a resolution saying “That Congress disapproves the final rule submitted by the Department of Homeland Security relating to ‘‘Public Charge Ground of Inadmissibility’’ (87 Fed. Reg. 55472 (September 9, 2022)), and such rule shall have no force or effect.”
The resolution was introduced by Sen. Roger Marshall, who said “… it is fair and sensible to favor prospective new citizens who will not be reliant on government benefits.”
This isn’t the first time that Sen. Marshall has fought to keep the US free from millions more of imported public charges recently. He did so as well in November of 2022, as his office publicized, saying:
U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. recently introduced a Congressional Review Act resolution to repeal the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) latest attempt to further erode the integrity of the United States’ immigration system. DHS’s recently announced final public charge rule would reduce the types of taxpayer-funded federal benefits – such as food stamps, housing vouchers, and Medicaid – a green card applicant receives that DHS can consider when determining whether to grant admission or lawful permanent residence. Senator Marshall’s measure would prevent the rule from having any force or effect.
“DHS’s proposed public charge rules continue our country down the dangerous path of incentivizing migrants to illegally cross our southern border. Granting citizenship to illegal aliens who would be dependent on federal benefits is a burden that American taxpayers and our national debt cannot afford,” said Senator Marshall. “The Trump Administration made it clear to would-be law breakers that they would receive no support or citizenship from the American government. We need to get back to policies like this if our country is going to have any hope at stopping the invasion at our southern border that started when President Biden took office.”
Upon introduction, Senator Marshall’s Congressional Review Act was endorsed by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).
“The Biden administration could care less about the ultimate stakeholder in our immigration system — the American people. That doesn’t only apply to a border that is being overrun, however. The public charge rule not only flouts Congress’ intent, it erodes the integrity of the legal immigration system and sticks it to American taxpayers. We encourage Senator Marshall’s colleagues to follow his lead and fight the Biden administration’s radical immigration policy agenda on all fronts,” said RJ Hauman, FAIR’s Head of Government Relations and Communications.
Speaking about the current resolution to fight back against the public charges, Rep. Troy Nehls, who introduced an identical resolution in the House, said “We have millions of our own American citizens without health insurance and receiving SNAP benefits, as well as hundreds of thousands sleeping on the streets at night. Instead of making it a priority to find our own citizens homes, meals, and health insurance, Joe Biden continues to exacerbate the issue.“
