Matthew McConaughey Refused to Back the Democratic Senate Candidate in Texas, and His Leftist Fans are Going Berserk

Matthew McConaughey found himself on the receiving end of an online scolding after encouraging Americans to consider independent candidates ahead of the midterms. Critics attacked his wealth, questioned his judgment and insisted that this election was the wrong time to look beyond the two major parties. His message arrived as other Texas celebrities were lining up behind Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico. Some commenters even invoked Willie Nelson to reprimand him.

The conflict followed a roughly six-minute video McConaughey posted on October 18th, 2026, titled “Independent counts.” Speaking directly to viewers, the actor discussed the choices available on their ballots and the influence independent lawmakers could exercise in Washington. Nelson, The Chicks and Kacey Musgraves were among the celebrities supporting Talarico, while McConaughey used his message to encourage voters to evaluate candidates outside the usual two-party competition.

He opened by challenging the argument that supporting an independent candidate amounts to throwing away a vote. “They’ve been telling us for years that an independent vote is a wasted vote,” McConaughey said. He then put a question to viewers: “A great question for our times is, how’s that ‘unwasted’ vote been working out for you?” McConaughey addressed the purpose of the video, saying, “I am not here today to endorse a candidate or party. I am here endorsing two things: fairness and reality.” He compared the political system to a fight in which the same two opponents keep trading punches, arguing that other candidates deserved an opportunity to compete. He turned to Americans who identify outside the two parties.

“The number one political identity in America today is not Republican, it is not Democrat. It is independent,” McConaughey said. He urged voters to take independent candidates seriously as potential winners. Later in the message, he criticized the political arrangements those candidates face: “The system has never been more lopsided.” His proposal called for electing a small group of independents who could hold decisive votes in Congress.

McConaughey described those lawmakers as a checkpoint that legislation would have to clear before advancing. He also discussed former Senator Joe Manchin’s Independent Leadership Council, which seeks to recruit independent congressional candidates. Addressing his reference to the organization, McConaughey added: “I am not endorsing an organization. I’m reintroducing us all to the original organization.” He envisioned members using their votes to require negotiations with leaders from either party.

The response included a lecture about what another celebrity would think. As Fox News reported, one commenter wrote: “This message is so irresponsible right now. Do the math. Willie Nelson would not be impressed.” Another account attacked McConaughey’s circumstances, writing, “This is a ridiculous, privileged perspective from someone with nothing to lose either way.”

Another commenter on his X video said, “We’re voting blue down the ticket. Sorry Matthew, but you have to pay taxes. Period.” Some were less civil, with one user saying, “Did AI write this for you? Because it sounds like it. And trying to get people to vote independent when this is basically our last chance to stop our nation’s permanent backslide into authoritarianism under Donald Trump and Republicans is beyond irresponsible and disgusting.”

One user suggested he was being paid to split the vote, saying, “Who is paying you to attempt to split the vote?” Another blamed independent voters for Trump’s win, commenting, “Well, your Independents’ ‘judgement’ gave us Trump. You unserious, wishy-washy mofos are mostly just a bunch of windsocks, anyway. Whichever way the wind is blowing, right? And how is ‘acting’ contributing to society? Get a real job.”

McConaughey closed by urging viewers to study their ballots and decide whether the candidates represented their beliefs. He asked them to consider who could exercise independent judgment in Washington. Returning to the prospects of candidates outside the major parties, he said, “Treat ’em like a potential winner because they can be.” His final appeal was brief: “America’s brand was never R or D. It’s independent.”
