A former television anchor at local Fox affiliates has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering her 80-year-old mother in a Halloween stabbing inside their Kansas home. Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 48, received the sentence on Monday, October 5th, for killing Anita Avers in Wichita last year. She will become eligible for parole after 25 years. Relatives described the attack and its aftermath in statements delivered during the sentencing hearing.
The hearing took place before Judge Jeffrey Goering in Sedgwick County District Court, following Mock’s August guilty plea to first-degree murder. Mock previously worked at KTVI Fox 2 in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015 and at KOKH Fox 25 in Oklahoma City. Her television career had ended before the killing, and Trending Politics reported that she was working in software sales at the time of her arrest.
Wichita police responded to the home on the morning of October 31st, 2025, after Mock contacted emergency dispatchers and claimed her mother had attacked her. Officers found Mock outside, bleeding and holding a towel. Inside the house, they discovered Avers unresponsive on her bed with stab wounds to her face and torso. Emergency personnel transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead that morning.
According to the probable cause affidavit, investigators found four kitchen knives and a cheese grater on a pillow beside Avers. All of those utensils had blood on them, and the top sheet contained at least 12 holes consistent with knife damage. Investigators also documented blood spatter on the bedroom walls, curtains and floor. An autopsy identified multiple stab wounds as the cause of death.
Mock gave officers differing accounts of the confrontation, as Trending Politics reported. She initially said she entered the bedroom to talk and saw her mother “sharpening knives,” then claimed Avers came after her with a knife. Mock later said the conversation concerned an upcoming job interview at Wichita television station KSN. The affidavit records that she first said she stabbed first, then said her mother had stabbed first.
The proceedings included a review of Mock’s ability to stand trial. KWCH reported that she was ordered to Larned State Hospital for a competency evaluation and treatment before a judge found her competent in July. Her stepfather, Barry Avers, told investigators that an earlier bipolar diagnosis had been revised to schizoaffective disorder. Mock subsequently entered her guilty plea before Judge Faith Johnson on August 21st.
During sentencing, Avers’ stepdaughter described the killing in a victim impact statement carried in Court TV’s courtroom coverage. “She ambushed Anita while Anita was in bed, asleep,” she said. She described the attack as “So devastating, so calculated, so demonic.” Mock cried as she listened to the statements, while relatives spoke about the woman they had lost and the circumstances of her death.

Sonja Kreutziger also described returning to the house with her husband to help her father clean up, according to KAKE’s report. “I scrubbed blood off the floors, walls, and curtains,” she said. Her husband and a family friend removed the mattress and bedroom carpet. Although they restored the house, she told the court that “there is nothing that can bring back the home that it was.”
Goering said Kansas law required the sentence he imposed, according to Court TV. Mock received credit for 339 days already served and will be unable to earn good-time credit to further reduce her sentence. She declined to deliver a statement addressing the killing or the relatives’ remarks. When the judge explained her appellate rights, Mock said she wanted the record to reflect that she didn’t intend to appeal.
