Megyn Kelly tore into Olivia Rodrigo for publicly condemning Cornell University over a disputed sexual assault case, telling the pop star to return to singing and stop offering uninformed commentary. Kelly challenged the celebrity response after examining the original prosecutor’s explanation and released text messages. She also warned that Rodrigo’s own music could become the subject of scrutiny if she continued weighing in.
The remarks came during the Monday, October 5th, 2026, episode of “The Megyn Kelly Show,” after Rodrigo posted an Instagram Story on October 4th supporting the former Cornell student identified as Jane Doe. Doe’s September lawsuit alleges that seven former Chi Phi fraternity members sexually assaulted her in October 2024. Kelly had devoted several recent broadcasts to the allegations, the defendants’ accounts, and questions about consent.
Rodrigo’s statement accused Cornell and other institutions of protecting rapists and abusers, praised Doe’s bravery, and demanded accountability. Kelly read the singer’s statement before addressing her directly. “Olivia, in sum, you don’t know what the f— you’re talking about. Shut up and stick to singing,” she said, launching into a criticism of Rodrigo’s decision to pronounce on the controversy.
As the New York Post reported, Kelly continued by mocking the singer’s music. “I liked you better when you were in front of a microphone singing your weird little depressing songs,” she said. Kelly delivered another pointed rebuke: “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and let people suspect you’re an idiot than to open it and prove them right.”
Kelly broadened her criticism to entertainers who mistake celebrity status for expertise, describing them as “know-nothing morons.” She accused stars whose careers benefited from vocal processing of suddenly believing they had something profound to contribute to cultural disputes. Her objection followed days of coverage challenging the public rush to label the accused men guilty before the contested evidence had been resolved.
She warned Rodrigo that she could begin pulling the singer’s songs and examining their lyrics. Kelly said that review would focus on the messages Rodrigo sends to young women and predicted it would go badly for her. The warning brought Rodrigo’s own influence on her audience into Kelly’s criticism of celebrities using their platforms to weigh in on the disputed case.
Kelly’s earlier coverage had addressed Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten’s September 28th, 2026, statement. He said Doe’s original sworn account described drug use and sexual conduct as “voluntary, conscious, and consensual.” His summary described three threesomes and said sexual activity stopped when she asked. He defended the original decision against charges as a legal assessment of her account, while expressly saying prosecutors had not questioned her credibility.

Released messages also showed Doe initially reassuring one participant that the sexual activity was legal and that she had enjoyed being with him. On October 23rd, 2024, she complained, “My reputation is destroyed and I’m utterly ashamed.” Later messages showed anger about being disinvited from a fraternity party, followed by a November 3rd, 2024, message describing most of the encounter as nonconsensual.
Kelly questioned whether that social fallout influenced Doe’s changing account, pointing to the chronology during her October 1st, 2026, coverage. Doe reported the alleged assault to police on November 8th, 2024. Her attorney disputes the prosecutor’s characterization, and the criminal investigation has reopened. Kelly’s explanation for the shift remains her interpretation of the records; the seven men had not been criminally charged as of October 7th, 2026.

Kelly’s warning about the lyrics followed her demand that Rodrigo sit down and stop commenting. She told the singer that an examination of the messages in her music would not end well for her. After challenging Rodrigo’s knowledge of the case and her intervention in the controversy, Kelly closed that portion of her response: “Be quiet. The adults are talking.”
