Phil Collins took shots at President Donald Trump during an interview with Piers Morgan and revealed a song idea mocking America as a country of “fat people with guns.” The British musician criticized the president’s manner and said his behavior made him difficult to respect. He also questioned Trump’s approach to diplomacy and speculated about a possible attempt to pursue a third term.
The exchange appeared in the October 2nd episode of “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” an interview covering Collins’ career, family and health struggles. The Genesis musician discussed his upcoming Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction alongside Oasis, his disagreements with other musicians and his difficulty playing drums. Morgan also asked about songwriting before the conversation moved through the royal family and eventually turned to American politics.
The song idea came up when Morgan asked whether musical inspiration had ever arrived unexpectedly. Collins said he sometimes gets ideas that he wants to preserve for later, then offered a title aimed at the United States: “Fat People with Guns, which is about America.” He explained that he had written down the phrase so he would remember it and could eventually develop a song around it.
During the interview, Collins joked that discussing the idea publicly might give someone else a chance to use it first. When Morgan asked whether he was still writing songs, the musician said he was no longer doing so. He also described how little music he listens to at home, explaining that he uses his phone and doesn’t even have a stereo. He said he no longer keeps drums at home, either.
Morgan asked Collins what he thought of Trump, prompting an immediate expression of dislike. Collins said he had never met the president and described watching footage of him being questioned in connection with a criminal accusation. His criticism centered on the way Trump conducted himself in that remembered footage. “His whole manner is unattractive,” Collins said, including when the president was denying wrongdoing.
As Consequence reported, Collins compared Trump’s demeanor with the qualities he associated with earlier presidents. He said past presidents had carried themselves with eloquence and elegance, allowing people to respect them despite political disagreements. He described Trump as “nasty” and said that behavior produced dislike for him. Turning to the president’s approach to governing, Collins argued that he treated politics as a business and judged deals by whether he won or lost.

The musician said diplomacy sometimes allows someone to concede ground while still achieving a successful outcome. He also mentioned watching Robert De Niro discuss his concerns about America and described the current political situation as frightening. Collins speculated that Trump might try to override the restriction limiting American presidents to two terms and framed that possibility as something he wouldn’t find surprising.
Morgan responded that his longstanding familiarity with Trump had taught him to expect surprises, but pushed back on the prospect of a third term. He said Trump wouldn’t be allowed to do it and that even Republicans and the president’s own supporters would oppose the suggestion. Collins suggested that Vice President JD Vance was being prepared to carry on Trump’s approach and described himself as someone who doesn’t consider himself political but believes he can distinguish “right from wrong.”
