Cherelle Griner, the estranged blushing bride of WNBA star Brittney Griner, is calling on a judge to take a fine-tooth comb through her soon-to-be ex-wife’s finances before coming to a final figure on the amount of child support she is to pay out. Griner created quite a media stir when she filed for divorce from Cherelle after almost a decade of supposed wedded bliss.
From the outside, it appeared the couple had it all going their way, as if they were both happy and content with each other. Cherelle Griner even spent a ton of time and energy advocating for Brittney’s release from a Russian prison on drug charges, something both Griners owe former President Joe Biden for, seeing as he traded dangerous terrorists to get her out of jail.
However, despite outward appearances, Cherelle described her marriage to Brittney as “irretrievably broken with no hope of reconciliation” in the court filing. She is also seeking physical custody of the child that is part of their family unit and wants the court to come up with a visitation schedule for her future ex-spouse, along with setting the amount of child support.
According to a report from Breitbart News, Cherelle wants the court to factor in Brittney’s much higher salary and earning potential when determining the amount of support she is to receive. Cherelle also claims, according to information from the filing, that the now estranged couple has a “substantial disparity” in income, and she is “unable to meet her reasonable financial needs on a monthly basis without continued support.”
Brittney, who is currently playing for the Connecticut Sun, earns a million dollars a year on her one-year contract. That number does not include any endorsements she may receive and overseas play she participates in. A final ruling on the situation has yet to be handed down. The two women struck up a relationship with each other in 2018 after they met as students at Baylor University.
During her time as a student, Brittney helped take the Bears to an NCAA national championship, completing an almost unheard of 40-0 undefeated season in 2012. And Cherelle won’t be the only person getting child support from Griner. Her ex-wife, a former WNBA player, Glory Johnson. Griner filed for an annulment of their marriage just 28 days into it in 2015.
Griner was ordered to pay child support to Johnson following the births of their twin daughters in October 2015. There were a lot of hot takes posted about the situation on Facebook. “Well I’m going to say this when she was lock up I know her wife kept fighting even went to the White House voicing her opinion for her to be released she stood by her side you never know what you have until you loose it. Then it’s too late,” one user wrote. “It was all about the money from the get-go,” another user commented, throwing some shade at Cherelle.
