Vice President JD Vance, the head of the White House fraud task force, held a press conference on September 22, 2026, where he announced that over 750,000 individuals have been removed from the federal healthcare marketplace who he claimed were fraudulently enrolled, saving taxpayers a whopping $2.2 billion.
During the press conference, Vance said that the task force is going to be reviewing the status of an additional 419,000 enrollees “to make sure that they’re, first of all, legal residents of the United States of America.” He then took an opportunity to explain why the task force is so important and how it will ultimately make the healthcare system in the country better for those that it is supposed to benefit.
“This is what the fraud task force is all about: on the one hand, saving the American taxpayers money and on the other hand, ensuring that these programs that are very important, that ensure that low-income kids can see a doctor, that ensure that our elderly Americans get the healthcare that they need,” Vance went on to say in remarks that were broadcast live on Newsmax and the free Newsmax2 streaming channel.
According to a report from Yahoo News, the vice president then added, “These programs, they are deserving. They’re important, but they’re not going to exist unless we stop the fraud.” Information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services revealed that this latest action removes close to 3% of registrants from the programs, which have 23.1 million enrollees in 2026.
“We’re actually making sure that the people receiving Obamacare subsidies are actually entitled to receive them,” Vance stated during his remarks. “Amazingly, we weren’t doing that before.” Eligibility checks for subsidies, which included verification of income, citizenship, and immigration status against government records were required by the marketplace, however the Trump administration said they were inadequate safeguards and ultimately allowed hundreds of thousands of improper enrollments.
A total of 315,000 unauthorized Obamacare enrollments are being canceled, which allegedly will impact 760,000 individuals, will result in $2.2 billion recovered taxpayer dollars. “In one case, we found a fraud ring that had 40 brokerage agents who had funneled 50,000 people into the Obamacare system fraudulently. Now, some of those people were probably legitimate,” the vice president said.
“Most of those people were not eligible. Either they didn’t meet the citizenship or the income requirements. Many of those people quite literally didn’t even exist,” he added. “We had a system in this country that rewarded brokers, that made people rich for enrolling fake people in programs that are meant to ensure that our fellow citizens have healthcare. This was a scandal.”

Agents and brokers who were in some way involved in violating federal marketplace standards in order to sign people up for government healthcare have been cut off and will be held accountable for their actions. CMS also revealed they are issuing a nationwide moratorium on all new agents and brokers who are paid by insurance companies and receive up to $25 a month for new enrollees they sign up.
“Now, there’s something that the Biden administration did, which is on the one hand they would provide incentives for brokers to enroll people into the Obamacare system, while at the same exact time they were relaxing eligibility for that program. And they weren’t even checking the relaxed eligibility that they imposed,” Vance remarked.
“So what do you have? You have a system where on the one hand, brokers are paid money to feed patients into the system, while on the other hand, the government isn’t even checking whether the people enrolled are actually eligible for the program. What do you have, of course: rampant, rampant fraud,” Vance said as he closed out his update.
