Republican Spencer Pratt, who ran a highly competitive political campaign in the Los Angeles mayoral race, though he ultimately failed to secure enough votes to move on to the general election in November, encouraged MAGA supporters to start holding Republicans in Name Only (RINOs) accountable for their compromise on values and principles that they claim to hold to.
Speaking at a rally, Pratt said, “You should, if you know these RINO Republicans, do your best to expose them. We don’t need any of these wolves in sheep’s clothes. They can go be Democrats and they can become socialist communists, but we don’t need anybody that’s not a true believer in America. Because you know, all along when they were trying to be like, oh, he’s a Republican. I didn’t have to say I was Republican because I was running on common sense because that’s what this party is.”
Pratt wasn’t always a conservative. The former reality television star said that he became a Republican while at the height of his TV fame due to receiving death threats from fans of the show who didn’t like him, as the series, “The Hills,” painted him up to be the heel or villain of the show. Pratt, who jumped into the mayoral race against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in January, went on to explain his mindset at the time.
“When I was a hated reality star, I got so many death threats –– I had so much security and police, and what did they tell me to do?” Pratt went on to tell CNN’s Elex Michaelson. “‘Get a gun.’ This is real. I know people don’t like guns, but L.A. was dangerous if you’re hated. So, I got a gun, my wife got a gun.” Pratt then said that he and his wife, Heidi Montag, needed to get concealed carry permits and the only people who supported them were Republicans.
“That was what I aligned with: my safety, my personal safety and my family’s safety,” Pratt said, according to The Hill via AOL. “I know people don’t like guns, but when people are threatening your life and your own security is telling you you need to have home protection –– trained, too … go through the proper steps.” He then told Michaelson that he knew gun ownership was a “hot button topic” in the city.
He then told her that part of his policy platform for the campaign was to put LAPD officers in every school to keep children safe from gun violence. President Donald Trump, a former reality star himself, endorsed Pratt in the race, saying he’s a “character” and that he “heard he’s a big MAGA person.” Unfortunately, Pratt did not advance thanks to a slow count of mail-in votes.
One user on X commented on a video of Pratt, saying, “AKA Thomas Massie…the biggest RINO in American history.” Another user said, “Exactly this. Get loud, stay focused, and ignore the noise. Fear mongering won’t work this time. Let’s make the midterms too big to rig.” Someone else wrote, “The message is simple: principles over politics, transparency over backroom deals.”
