North Carolina Democratic state House candidate Scott Huffman is facing renewed scrutiny over a social media comment that appeared to mock Charlie Kirk’s assassination. A screenshot attributed to Huffman shows a comment criticizing Kirk before stating, “Karma has a way of coming back.” Huffman is now seeking elected office in North Carolina’s 76th House District.
The screenshot resurfaced on September 10th, the first anniversary of Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University. Libs of TikTok posted the image while drawing attention to Huffman’s upcoming race against Republican Greg Edds. The image paired Huffman’s comment with a photograph of the candidate holding a sign that read, “NO ICE IN ROWAN COUNTY.”
The Facebook comment displayed in the screenshot reads, “Charlie Kirk spewed hate. He was a racist and thought women and people of color were beneath him. Karma has a way of coming back.” The final sentence seems to suggest that Kirk’s fatal shooting was a consequence of the incorrect views Huffman attributed to him in the comment. Kirk was a 31-year-old husband and father of two when he was shot and killed.
Libs of TikTok shared the screenshot on X and asked North Carolina voters whether they wanted someone like Huffman representing them. “This is what Scott Huffman said after Charlie was ass*ssinated,” the account wrote. “NC, do you want someone representing you who mocks the ass*ssination of a young father??”
The post quickly drew widespread attention, accumulating more than 149,000 views, 10,000 likes, and 4,600 reposts by the time it was reviewed. One commenter accused Huffman of never having watched Kirk’s debates, while North Carolina-based commentator Matt Van Swol described Huffman as “vile.” Another commenter said, “Celebrating the death of a podcaster who hosted dialogue sessions on college campuses makes u unfit to hold political office. Or any job.”
North Carolina State Board of Elections records identify the candidate’s full name as Jeffrey Scott Huffman. He filed as a Democrat on December 18th, 2025, and will face Republican Greg Edds in the November general election. Both candidates list Salisbury addresses.
The contest is for the seat currently held by Republican state Rep. Harry Warren, who has represented the district and its predecessors since 2011. Warren is leaving the legislature to run for Rowan County Clerk of Superior Court, creating an open race between Huffman and Edds. District 76 covers part of Rowan County, where Huffman was photographed holding a sign opposing ICE activity in the county.

Kirk was assassinated on September 10th, 2025, while answering questions before thousands of people at Utah Valley University in Orem. The Associated Press reported on the anniversary that Tyler Robinson, who is accused of killing Kirk, has pleaded not guilty and could face the death penalty if convicted of aggravated murder. Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA and became one of the country’s most influential organizers of young conservative voters.
Huffman has sought public office before, losing congressional races to Republican Ted Budd in 2020 and Republican Dan Bishop in 2022. He received 31.8% against Budd and 30.1% against Bishop, according to state election results. No public response from Huffman to the renewed controversy could be located as of publication. The District 76 race will be decided on November 3.
